Is there a way in GrapheneOS'es pdf-viewer to search documnets for certain words?

It doesn't look like it. The PDF viewer uses Vanadium as a backend for further sandboxing, if I remember correctly, so it might be possible to add that functionality.

I guess the search feature would reduce the sandbox, that would explain the wait.

how/why...? I have a "lex" (legal text) pdf with 1355 pages and if I go offline adobe still manages to index it can give me search results. What I want to say: as long it's local/in-app there shouldn't be a reason for the sandboxing to counter it

At least if it's a not protected pdf you should be able to search if you also can copy.
And if you also implement some kind of OCR searching should be possible in further scope.

I fear it is simply left to be as "it is what it is"

Yes, I also thought of OCR capabilities, but it would become quite resource-intensive, especially for legal text PDF.

I was taking an example from softwares like Dangerzone, that’s why I guessed it was maybe the reason.
In Acrobat Reader (desktop), while in Protected Mode, the basic search function is only able to search in the current page; advanced search can scan the whole document but it seems to be hindered regarding speed.

      We will see.
