I'm experiencing problems with the automatic wifi connections and I'd appreciate some assistance in getting around this.

  • My P7a has got the latest GOS stable release
  • Network preferences: Automatic enable wifi is ENABLED
  • Network preferences: Turn off Wifi automatically: 5 minues
  • I've got two wifi connections: Home and Work
  • Each Wifi connection is configured to Automatically connect

Yet, upon arriving at home or at work, Wifi is not automatically enabled and I'm left at the internet connection via Mobile data.

What is missing to make this automatic Wifi enabling happen?

I believe you will have to leave location turn on. The phone should be able to know when it's at home or work.

    Further on my P7a:

    • Settings: Location is ON

    Apps with Location privileges Always:

    • Google Play-services
    • MacroDroid
    • Macrodroid Helper

Apps with Location privileges during use:

    • Camera
    • Google Play Store
    • Maps
    • Vanadium
    • Vivaldi
    • WifiAnalyzer
    • Yellowbrick

My work is saved but I still have to manually connect because there is a button on their connection page I have to tap.

Stephan-P I believe the GrapheneOS feature (turn off automatically after timeout) overrides the automatic connection

I would not consider this issue solved.

So, what am I to do to get my much desired Automatic re-enable WiFi when near a known WiFi connection?

      • Can Google Play services be of assistance here?
      • I've been trying to get a Macrodroid Geofencing macro running, but that's rubbing into problems as well....
      • Is there no other option than to keep the WiFi ON 24/7?

Stephan-P Is there no other option than to keep the WiFi ON 24/7?

At present maybe leaving it on and manually toggling might be the available options. Is there a specific concern with leaving it on?

PaulDavis battery drainage, and being tracked when out shopping etc are immediate thoughts

I think for many users battery life depends more on which apps are running and using the network than on power usage by Wi-Fi while not connected. I can get multiple days on a full charge.

While out and about, the GrapheneOS Wi-Fi setup, which does aggressive MAC-address randomization, among other things (see: Wi-Fi privacy), is not believed to be a noteworthy tracking risk. The sole exception would be if a device is aware of one or more so-called "hidden" Wi-Fi networks, which force the device to continuously leak information about those networks ("hidden" Wi-Fi networks are a privacy risk and, if used, should probably be deleted from the device immediately after use -- see, for example, "Hidden Network" on this Apple page explaining why their devices warn users about "hidden" Wi-Fi networks).
