Ooops

Try changing the screen timeout on the tablet to 10 minutes.

[deleted] I set it to 30 min. It’s been 30 min now with no change from the events previously described. Tablet still says “restarting device” and the pixel 8 has rebooted to fast boot mode and has been sitting like this since.

"For the Pixel Tablet, disconnect it from the stand before continuing. The stand uses USB to provide charging and audio output, but the tablet lacks support for using both the stand and USB port at the same time."

      Reference: https://grapheneos.org/install/web

It’s not in the stand. On a desk, connected to pixel 8 via OEM new cable.

        1. Try a different browser. eg: Brave (with Brave Shields disabled, since it caps storage usage at a low value to avoid fingerprinting available storage)
        2. Try a different flashing device instead of the Pixel Tablet.

At 50 min with no change.

            Ooops

            After a failed flash:

            1. Does the phone still boot into an operating system?
            2. Is the stock Google firmware still on the phone?

              [deleted]

              1. Yes.

              2. Once I press start within fast boot mode the phone boots into boot loser mode several times then into a Google screen several times and then into a Google standard user mode, sometimes as a new device with all settings as if I just turned it in out of the box and other times as if I just woke it up, meaning developer mode is still on, OEM UNLOCK is still on.

              And then I try again.

[deleted] can I try using an iPhone with a chrome browser? Would that work?

Ooops No, iOS doesn't allow apps to access USB devices that are not strongly tied to the apps.

Ooops It sounds like a bad USB cable. You can try unplugging it and plugging it back in once it reaches the fastbootd mode screen.

GrapheneOS I have tried two different OEM pixel cables with same hang spot. I will track down another Pixel device to use to conduct web install. I just wish I knew what is happening so I can fix it.

                  I figured it out

                  FunnyDuck provided the answer!

Thank you. I had to reconnect about 6-8 times throughout the process. Each time pressing the “unlock boot loader” button on the install page so the install device would find the Pixel 8. Once the device was seen again the process would continue. Until finally the “lock boot loader” button became available and then locked the device. All good, just not sure why the tablet loses contact with the pixel8 each time it boots. Thanks everyone.

Ooops Thanks for reporting back! This information may well be useful to others later.

Thanks for this - you saved me hours of searching.

Bumping in case anyone else has the same problem but also because some messages have been deleted and the solution was not clear to me initially.

I was also installing from a Pixel Tablet to an 8a. I had the same situation where the install just hung at "restarting device.." but there were no obvious errors and the phone was idle at fastboot.

It appears as if the two devices disconnect and so the process stalls. The solution, as stated by Ooops, is to reconnect by pressing the "unlock boot loader" button a few steps back and selecting the device in the following pop up. This kicks the install back into action and you can see the OS flashing progress bar. This needs to be done each time the phone reboots.
