Using RCS with Google Messages on GrapheneOS

canondrum I tried everything you have, I'm not sure if the security update toggle installed anything or not as I didn't see a difference when selecting Check for updates after toggling it on. I even joined the beta program on Messages, restarted my phone and it still just says "Status: Connecting" in my messages app for RCS indefinitely. I have all the permissions you set activated too. Did you have to allow the Play services to "Read phone numbers" or "Read device identifiers" through App Ops? Also curious which option in Debug settings do you click to see the Etoufee: true/false?

skorge GrapheneOS Makesforget oh, nevermind. New messages are not actually delivering. Text only messages sent to groups appear delivered but really aren't, ones sent to individuals say not delivered. An image sent to an individual was delivered via RCS and received a reaction, which is what made me think it was all working- but it was only that image. Odd!

skorge I didn't check logs as I didn't get a full app crash. It does give a little toast error if I toggle device verification on an individual phone number.

My current status is that despite the green once last night I'd cleared all data again since I wasn't seeing "chat". This morning I had a 4006 error, and now I'm waiting for an OS update (presumably the security update) to finish. Will try again after that.

RCS indeed works now with the new update. Now that it's working though, is it actually safe to use the Google Messages app? I used QUIK until now. I know SMS is insecure anyway, but I still don't want to leak additional data to Google. What's the stance here?

I couldn't get it working on build 2025092701
I tried increasing permissions and deleted app data in between.
After Carrier services installed + phone, SMS, call list on play services + all permissions on Google Messages and still no result, I just decided to give up. RCS is a nice to have for me and not a necessity.

ron For me, giving phone permissions to play services (it only has notifications, network and phone now) and then installing google messages (which has pretty much all the permissions except location), it just worked after I checked it in the settings. Let's see if it sticks. First time that it is working for me

spl4tt have you been able to test with actual RCS messaging yet?

Some users have said they'd gotten the Messages settings to confirm RCS was connected, but the services weren't actually working correctly (messaginf sending as SMS only, etc).

No luck with 2025092700. I cleared storage on Carrier Services, Play Services, and reinstalled Messages (Enabled SMS and relevant permissions on all 3 apps before launches messages).

It took me through the normal "Please wait, activation in progress" state for a while, and now I'm back to "Your device doesn't meet the minimum security requirements"

If you have Play Protect Off you'll get the "Your device does not meet security requirements. Code 4006"

It may not start working for some people without clearing data for Play services in addition to Google Messages, but that will screw up apps depending on Play services to an extent such as losing the current FCM push registrations which some apps may not recreate promptly.

mousetrapreplica You seem to be correct. It says it's connected, but it only works with sms still, even with my friend who has a stock p10 pro with rcs enabled as well

It's working for me. Thank you to the developers! I'm on a vzw mvno. I uninstalled messages, gave play services phone permission, reinstalled messages and, before opening it, gave it permissions (no location). When I opened it, I set it to default when prompted, went to settings, and rcs said connected.

I'm on Mint and not able to get it working, but I'm interested to know if some resource exists to understand the codes shown accompanying the status. I've had 3000 before, but I now sometimes have 3200. Status is still telling me that activation is ongoing, and the message intermittently shows "trouble connecting, awaiting retry."

I've struggled with RCS since Sept. 10, and still struggle.
T mobile on a pixel 8. Have tried deleting the esim, wiping play services/carrier services/messages etc.
On latest update, having similar loops on 3000 and 3200 codes. Sometimes a "Your deviceis not supported"

I am also experiencing the issue where the RCS will show as connected (after jumping through the hoops of all of the data clears), but when I send messages, they are still going out as SMS instead of RCS.
My RCS Connection state in the debug menu is showing the Etoufee Provisioned: False

FlareHeart It works instantly for me, registration take a few seconds but it stays blocked on "Etoufee Provisioned: False" too, even Carrier Services or uninstalling + reinstalling don't seems to work:

Google Fi, Pixel 9 Pro Fold

No RCS, latest security update, stable channel of GrapheneOS, Beta Carrier Services and Beta Google Messages.

What I've tried: Uninstall reinstall of messages, permissions granted before opening, clearing cache and storage of play services and messages, uninstall and reinstall of carrier services.

Attempts to produce logs have all turned up empty from the debug>rcs menu,

Any and all assistance is appreciated, I'm losing my sanity, lol.

EDIT: To clarify, RCS tries to connect forever and then says its unavailable for my device due to security constraints or something like that.

Once we figure out a consistently working solution, how does everyone feel about spinning off the conversation into a new thread?

My (limited) understanding is that with the attempts at deeper integration w/ GrapheneOS + explicit instructions, it will cut down on sifting through a 1000-post thread for future users.

naibed 100% agree with this. I wouldn't mind some sort of guide of sandbox permission, here's baseline minimum what permission you need to get messages, dialer, maps etc working. you play around with the rest on your own. even if we came together and made some sort of community guide. I wouldn't mind using some google apps but here what you can do either minimize the evasiveness of google and you can turn everything off and use this app. Like I use gboard and I have nothing allowed and camera ask every time. and I read somewhere back when I got started on grapheneos that you could use gboard with no permissions.
