USB-C port sertings confusion

What does each of this different settings do?

I tried the "Charging-only when locked, except BFU" setting.
I unplugged my charger rebooted my device and plugged in the charger (device was BFU) and it started charging. Isn't this setting supposed to disable USB-C BFU and therefore disable charging?

Matchbox explains here. But no, that settings does not disable USB-C BFU. It makes it so you can use USB for non-charging purposes (plug in peripheral devices) only when the device is BFU or in AFU but unlocked.

Dumdum Does this mean the "USB-C port" setting overrides the "USB peripherals" setting?

Let's say I set USB-C port" to "off" and "USB peripherals" to "Allow new USB peripherals". Are any USB peripherals going to work in that case? I suppose not?

I think the "usb peripheral" setting is a kind of master setting that enables users to control whether USB connections can be made at all, whereas the newer "usb port" setting gives more control over what the USB connection can actually do. Setting USB peripheral to "allow new peripherals" and the USB-C port to "off" wouldn't override it (in the sense of turning USB off), it would make it so that any USB connection can do nothing more than charge the phone when the device is off (as stated in subtext under the 'Off' option).

Matchbox also mentioned that the "USB peripherals" setting is made essentially redundant by the USB-C Port setting, so I'll guess at some point they'll be removed.

It's the other way around. The USB-C port setting is the new one, the USB peripherals setting is the old one, which is the one that's weaker and eventually going away.

For sideloading an update, you're not booted into the OS, so the state of the USB-C port setting doesn't apply in that case.
