What is the limitation with editing files in cloud folders? I can navigate to my cloud provider/folder through the files app and open them with various apps, but none of them allow editing.

I am trying to see if I can use the Pixel Tablet with GOS as my daily driver to replace my Windows PC, but this is a core functionality that I need that all desktop PCs currently have. I explored using Syncthing, but that still requires that I keep a Windows PC around for syncing purposes.

Does the GOS community have any solutions to this?

Thank you.

AttemptUndertook What is the limitation with editing files in cloud folders?

    Network access.

I can edit everything in my Nextcloud app or in the Nextcloud web interface. The corresponding apps must be installed/activated on the Nextcloud server and phone.

AttemptUndertook The trick is finding an app that will support what you're looking to do. Like there are apps that do that natively, like MS Word or Google Docs, but you might need to find an app that supports opening and saving files from multiple document/storage providers. It's possible, you just have to find apps that support what you're looking for.

I guess it would help to know what kinds of files you're hoping to edit? Maybe others in the community will have suggestions on apps that work for them when editing remote files. Nextcloud, like boldsuck mentioned, might be a good project for you to look into.

I currently use Proton Drive and I have generally been happy with their ecosystem, but I cannot edit .md, .txt, .docx, .xlsx, etc. from my Proton Drive app or the GOS Files app even if I have the corresponding apps that can edit these files.

I haven't explored Nextcloud yet, but if that is the only option, I will definitely check them out. Does editing work without any lag as it would on a native app made for these file types? Also, does it allow offline editing?

For concreteness it would likely be helpful to specify apps (ideally by URL and version number) for some of those types, e.g., .xlsx and .md.

For example, I use Markor as my mark down editor for .md files, but it can only access on-device files from within the app. Even though Proton Drive downloads a copy and stores my files locally on the device, Markor cannot access the Proton Drive cloud folder.

I can go to the files app and select the .md file which does open with Markor, but Markor cannot save edits.

Maybe Markor is not the right app for what I am trying to do, but other apps behave in a similar way. I am hoping the GOS community has a solution here.

AttemptUndertook Files in Proton Drive cannot be edited in place. They are stored encrypted, you need to download them, edit them and the upload them again! Not that bad, its what I do!

Does it work differently on Windows? Because I can freely open, edit and save files in a cloud folder without the hassle of downloading and uploading.

Is there another cloud service that offers the same level of convenience on Android?

AttemptUndertook I wouldn't know... I use Proton and still have my Google Drive which I use almost never. Proton is not the most convenient, but that's what I choose to use because it is end-to-end encrypted and stored with zero-access encryption. I would rather have privacy and security than convenience.
