  • What is the issue behind Apt packages being so broke/out of date for Android?

Platform tools is 5yrs behind. Noble still has it as 28 when it's not on 35. I understand that fwupd will be updated in the next 24 release (it's in Noble/Sid). I know this is a Debian/Ubuntu issue, just wondering if you guys know why this is the case.

*broken

Because these distros usually are stuck on years old packages from the start of the duration of their existence. It is a key problem of modern OS engineering if you ask me. It applies to all packages on these distros typically, with very few exceptions.

I noticed this when I couldn't run flash_all.sh because fastboot was out of date! It surprised me that packages were so incredibly old on the most recent apt lists for Mantic.

Now I often go see if I can find the app from the developer's GitHub or website if it's something I use often, otherwise for convenience I just install the old version from apt.

I know Deb/Ubu isn't rolling release but the Android tools package is 5yrs out of date and isn't being updated in the next release from what I can tell. Must have been forgotten about/disregarded. Crazy cause it's a useful package and Apt is one of if not the biggest Repos. Wonder if opening a request on one of their platforms would get it updated.

Commenting to get this back to the top

[deleted] This sounds like something to bring up with them. GrapheneOS has no control over when things are updated by other OSes.

[deleted] I know this is a Debian/Ubuntu issue, just wondering if you guys know why this is the case.

Debian is a community project, currently no one has the desire or time to maintain these packages.

If you would like to help, you can find the email address of the Android Tools Maintainers here:

boldsuck Ah did not know that. Good to know, thanks.

other8026 I read this is in the install guide and misunderstood it

This section can be skipped on Arch Linux and other distributions with fwupd 1.9.10 or later since we reported the bug and it was fixed
