I've been playing a game from the Japanese play store called "Project Sekai" and it worked fine at first, but after not playing the game for some time and picking it up later, it stopped working. Between the time there were some updates to the app/game itself.

To clarify what I mean when it "stopped working", the game is able to start and go into its initial splash screen, once you tap the splash screen it will start loading all the resources. During the process of loading the resources, it crashes.

I'm not familiar with Android development at all, but from my understanding, firebase would imply an API call out, so I was naively wondering if there's something that blocks it from reaching the server? Any privacy setting on GrapheneOS?

I'm also not sure if I've changed any settings on my phone during the time that I didn't play, or if the game simply has become incompatible with my phone.

Would definitely appreciate some insight on this, even if it doesn't solve the issue at hand, thanks a bunch!

    Hello there!

To make it easier for us to help you, could you please clarify whether you have Sandboxed Google Play installed and configured properly?

Did you download the aforementioned game from the Play Store?

Do you have Google Play Games installed in the same user profile?

Hulk Apologies for leaving out those essential details.

      • I have Google Play Store sandboxed on my Owner profile.
      • The game is downloaded via "QooApp" store, which in similar fashion works like Aurora but fetches games from the Japanese Google Play Store.
      • I have installed Google Play Games (via the official Play Store) on the owner profile. I believe the game "Project Sekai" could work without it, but I know I've logged in/tied my Play Games account to "Project Sekai" before, so I installed it just in case.

Regarding my Sandboxed Google Play configuration. Through the GrapheneOS "App" I've installed "Google Play Store", "Google Play services", and "Google Services Framework".

To rule out some issues, I've granted network access to "Google Play Store", "Google Play Games", Google Services Framework" and have all of them in "Unrestricted" battery mode.

Edit: I only recently played with the "Reroute location request to the OS" (by turning it off). Otherwise, I have not touched any setting within the "Settings -> Apps -> Sanboxed Google Play" section.

The way you described it, it seems GP Services doesn't have the network permission. If that's the case, it's very likely your issue.
Just to clear things up :

      • Google Services Framework doesn't require network nor unrestricted
      • Google Play Services always requires network and requires unrestricted battery usage for push notifications to work properly
      • Google Play only needs network

Welteam Thanks for clearing up the permissions, I gave it a go, but unfortunately I'm still getting the issue (the same error log).

These are the additional things I've tried since previously:

        • Completely removed any app that could strangle outbound requests.
          • Apps similar to TrackerControl or RethinkDNS. I've also done "forget vpn" to remove them in the android settings VPN list.
        • Reinstalled "Google Play Store", "Google Play Games".
        • Logged out and then logged in to my Google account.

The one thing I'm afraid of is uninstalling the game and then reinstalling it as I might lose my progress. I have however reinstalled the game simply by installing the same version apk while it is already installed (to try to "repair" it).

Additionally, there were times when I've actually disabled Google Play Store itself because I thought it wasn't needed once my apps were installed. Would that have any impact? Just to clarify, it is currently enabled, and my current setup is according to your suggested setup.

I can't help you more than that. This might be an issue with the game but unlikely. The only way to move forward would be to get logs and find someone to look at them.

Welteam The Pixel 7 just officially announced today, so I'll see if I can put away my urge to play the game until then and simply migrate my Pixel 3 content to Pixel 7.
