  • Why tf does Proton Mail need Google Play Services to show notifications?

Has anyone tested whether their new beta app still requires Play Services for push notifications? It's supposed to be a complete rewrite of the app...

In any case at least they could provide a fallback to websockets for those (like me) who don't use Google Play Services to keep notifications functional in some way as opposed to having to check manually for new messages. That is not going to cost them the earth and will satisfy part of their usebase.

zzz I concur with this point of view. The Proton team knows and are working towards a solution. No ETAs at this time that we know of. It's complex and expensive to develop an alternative solution due to the volume of notifications handled. I'll give my best to keep giving them this feedback. IMHO, it's a matter of resources and priorities, due to the scale of this. As is probably everything that's still on their roadmap.

I really hope they'll arrive to a useful outcome for a better de-googling experience.

      wuseman mailbox.org, systemli.org, riseup.net, dismail.de, startmail.com, mailfence.com, posteo.de

Tutanota, but they also require an own App.

But you need to trust them anyways, unless you use PGP. If you are worried about "LaW eNfOrCeMenT" reading your stuff, use a mail provider from a country that has not very active connections to yours. 15 eyes and stuff, NATO, contracts, international Police Law.

People in the past didn't know if they had a mail until they checked their mailbox. And they lived happily ever after. I don't rely on native apps for the most part. I couldn't care less about notifications. I do things at will. I am my own boss. Call me Frank (Sinatra). I do things my way. This will get deleted lol.

[deleted] I like your approach. I prefer Mark Knopfler and his "I'm a slow learner", you get my point.
