Proton updates

I have Protonmail and ProtonVPN installed using Obtanium which handles any updates with links to the Github release. I would like Proton drive and ProtonCalendar and it seems I have to get these as direct APK downloads from Proton as they are not in Github. I don't think a direct APK download will provide auto-updates so is there a method to manage updates for these two apps.

For background, I have no Play Services or Play Store facility on my phone.

MotherShipton wishing for the same thing. I don't know why Proton doesn't have them on git.

What kind of worries me is the fact their source code is no longer available. That makes the whole suit of apps sort of proprietary and for those who use it, less trustworthy. I think I will not renew my subscription with them. You are free to think different.

ProtonCalendar is the only one that doesn't seem to be open source at the moment. A quick search gave me this reddit comment from the Proton team a year or so ago. Not sure if there's any more recent info.

Thanks for the replies. I used the Github links for the up to date releases of Mail and VPN in Obtanium. Unfortunately, the Github page for ProtonDrive does not link to any actual releases so I don't see how to use that in Obtanium. I choose not to use ProtonPass yet.

Is there any way to use RSS tracker to notify of latest releases of Drive and Calendar? I did not try any RSS reader before but could it notify me when do do a manual update?

You can actually set these up in Obtainium by using the URL links for the download pages.
Drive:

Just tested them before writing this, and they seem to work as far as I can tell. Can't really say how well they work with updates though until there's, well, updates for the apps. And the "version" displayed by Obtainium is a seemingly random string of numbers.

Try it though and see if you have any problems with it. As for any kind of change logs, I'm not really sure if there are any.

This is what I do. Aurora store will notify me of updates (even though I did direct APK installs)

I pop into Obtainium, reset install status and update.

Signal seems a bit wonky. Aurora store keeps notifying of an update but version matches installed version. I did APK direct for Signal as well. I just ignore Aurora store notifications for now.

Thanks. I have installed as you suggested. However, without update notification it is not really different than downloading and installing the apk direct from the page myself. I can look to Aurora perhaps for the notifications and I will try a message to Proton support for their input.

Frostily7047 You can actually just let Signal update itself, the app has a 90 day expiration counter in every build; so in order to make it easier for people who download the apk from their website the app has an auto-updater function.

MotherShipton Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but I'm curious if you are still using the direct apks instead of the play store? If so, have you figured out a smooth process of updating?

I currently use the proton apps (except mail) in a profile without play services, but I did install them from the play store (in a different profile) for the sake of easy and clean updates. But I'd love to use the apks directly if it isn't a major hassle updating the apps.

I'm glad you posted this, literally yesterday I was getting FOSS APKs for all my proton apps, and thought my old age was showing because I wasn't able to find the calendar.

Oh well, since its not open source I will be moving to the new SMT calendar that was forked. (I forget the name of its rebrand)

Download gmail and disable data collection. At least, since e-mail is an extremely old technology, you won't have any more friction, and you need it anyway to be able to download apps from the play store. So you'll have Google security plus privacy if you disable data collection.

tilion_silverbow I use APKMirror to obtain the apps, Obtainium to track the update releases and APKVerifier to verify the apks.

The only Proton app I am currently using is VPN and using Obtanium for updates. Other Proton services that I use are accessed via Vanadium browser which is a bit less convenient but does not come with the concerns raised in this thread

ErnestThornhill Obtainium will only track the updates from APKmirror, correct? You'll have to manually update the app? Not saying this is a problem necessarily, just making sure I've got it right.

tilion_silverbow Correct. Whenever a new update is released, Obtainium will let you know.
