Again battery problems with Molly-FOSS and Websocket Services.
-on WiFI power consumption is very good with <1% battery drainage
-on Mobile 5G it takes >60/70%

I have a P7a with latest stable GOS.
Is there something I can do?
(for now I switched to 4G to see if there is a difference, but I`m affraid it is not that easy to resolve)

Cant understand why battery drainage is again and again and again such a huge problem with this app.
As I tested the UnifiedPush Version a year ago, it didn`t lower consumption, so I changed to FOSS again.

Wow, 60/70% is crazy. I've also seen high numbers with Molly-FOSS, but closer to 20%. I'm honestly tempted to just bite the bullet and install play services to solve this problem, but trying so hard to resist until the IPC scopes feature is released.

with 4G it is a little bit less >50-60% :)

Dont have a glue if this is a android15, signal/molly or provider-problem.
GAPPS is not a solution for me. Perhaps I try MollyUp one more time.

I have been using Molly FOSS on P8P and battery drain is minimal for WiFi/4G/5G. Very impressed.

Still experimenting now with MollyUP. Cant say yet, if it is better. Yesterday id didnt look like.
Reinstalling the MollyFOSS will be the next step. (but how can this be the cause?)
I wonder, because since some time Molly was working good and without any problems, just until now.

Now on mobile 4G with MollyUP-FOSS its the same problem with the same waste of energy.
43%Molly, 32%ntfy, (and for example FailEmail 12%)
The device used about >15% of charge in 6h only with Molly and email in background listening if there are new messages, and there was only one message on Molly.

I`m helpless with this situation. But finally the fault is not specific on Molly or ntfy. There must be a general problem with WebSockets.

rufus I have had the same problem with my 8a and at the moment my final solution is to deinstall Molly & Co. But it seems strange that some users do not have this problem and some have.

rufus I was on 5G almost all day and the usage from Molly (non-UP variant) is around 6% constantly. Do you run any VPN or custom DNS? It might help to monitor how many connections Molly makes with something like RethinkDNS.

Meanwhile I did uninstall MollyUP and reinstalled MollyFOSS with a few reboots in between.
Still the same on mobile data.
@DeletedUser87 No VPN but custom DNS. I will try with the providers DNS next and see.
And what if RethinkDNS discovers lots of Molly-connections? I´m not a software engeneer. :)
@nanoq what else if not signal/molly? next step would be to give up smartphones in general. ;)

Then you will have some data to compare to other users. There certainly shouldn't be a flood of connections; so when you see that, you know that something is wrong.
Try with the regular DNS first. Then we'll investigate further.

If it is any consolation, the Signal app on my business iPhone used 10% of my battery yesterday and I used it for one 5 minute call and to send 3 messages. I think the issue may be something beyond Molly/GrapheneOS.

One thing I remember another member posting was changing the battery settings from unrestricted to optimized. I believe they said notifications still continued to work fine for them and battery life improved. I haven't tried it myself as I wouldn't trust that notifications would come through, but perhaps its worth you trying it if you've exhausted other options.

Tested over night with regular DNS and MollyFOSS connected with 5G. No changes!
Battery usage is about 3% per hour and up to 80% of that is Molly. (FairEmail is 1-10%)
That seems to be enought to say that something is wrong with it.

Perhaps a "privat space" with Signal and Play Services would be more efficient, but not what I want.

rufus unlucky. I'm kinda out of ideas too. I can only imagine something wrong with the app settings... I've heard that it's supposed to be a battery hog for some, but never seen it myself. I hope someone else has an idea.

Notifications definitely do not work if the app is not allowed to run in background. This must be a wrong information.

Meanwhile I gaved up and hope it gets fixed somehow in the future.

Spending about 10% battery for one day on mobile data is what I only can dream about.
"Only one call...." but you forget the hole time where Signal is up to check for incomming messages.
(For comparison, in my situation I do spend 75% of battery for 24h with Molly at mobile data.)

Well, that was on my iPhone. The notifications are centralized through apple's encrypted notification system AFAIK, so signal is not maintaining a constant connection for incoming. Similar to how if you have google play services installed on graphene.

i was having abysmal battery with stock signal and the permanent connection.

i ended up going with the unified push flavor of molly.

separately i set up mollysocket and ntfy on a vps. i was already using ntfy app on my phone for a few other things so this did not result in any difference in battery. molly-up is now taking under 5% per day, many days closer to 2%.

this is perfect and works incredibly well!

That is great to hear! Can you use that setup for push notifications for other things to consolidate the connections? Specifically I'm curious about if you can get push for tuta or proton mail apps via unified push?

Molly up with UnifiedPush has this kind of notifications but ntfy needs unlimited battery.
