Third party apps can obviously have these effects have you got any that might be interfering? ie Media Players using android:keepScreenOn="true" or FLAG_KEEP_SCREEN_ON if you can't figure it out it might be worth grabbing a bug report from SETTINGS>SYSTEM>DEVELOPER OPTIONS>BUG REPORT and using interactive just after you notice it and looking for those flags.

I can't think of any obvious candidate app, but I like your thinking. I'll watch out for the next time it happens and then look at the bug report. Thanks.

A grep through the bug report shows one app (Lexica) uses the KEEP_SCREEN_ON flag, which is fair enough. However, the issue occurs when doing other things, e.g. browsing in Vanadium.

I also left the phone on overnight to see if it was something that only occurred in shortly after boot, but it still happened during my morning news catch-up.

The only other occurrence of that string within the bug report was in the list of "Enabled log groups" under Window Manager Logging.

I've noticed this as well. Also intermittently. Like it'll do it on proton drive (screen stays on past my time-out, no interaction) but after simply navigating away and eventually back to the proton drive page-- it'll time out properly.

Thanks deign it's good to know someone else has seen this.

I had it happen again at lunchtime. I was using Feeder at the time, then pressed the "home" button to get to the home screen and then left it alone, at this point the screen stayed on. So I enabled developer mode, created a bug report (and the screen stayed on during the whole process, which takes > the 30s I have set to timeout) and when it was finished, I saved the report. Searching through all files, there was only one instance of KEEP_SCREEN, which occurred in the bugreport-XXXXX.txt file, indicating the enabled log options as before.

Happens on my pixel 5 occasionaly. My time out is set to 1 minute. Ive noticed it can take 5 minutes or so to turn off.
No screen protector, touch sensitivity is default.

nrt Removed device specific tag as we now have confirmation of it occurring on multiple devices.

Thanks for everyones feedback so far including the information you've gained from the logs TranceSeven

Issue created on the tracker: https://github.com/GrapheneOS/os-issue-tracker/issues/1268

While that is there can everyone @nrt @TranceSeven @deign please try clearing the cache under the storage options of the settings apk and report back:
        SETTINGS>APPS>SEE ALL>TOP RIGHT 3 DOT SHOW SYSTEM>LOCATE SETTINGS> STORAGE>CLEAR CACHE

Various sites show it as a possible solution for this which affects Android 12 after a quick Startpage.

MetropleX it doesn't appear to be specific to any site nor app. For example, this morning I was reading through this forum, when it occurred. Other times I might be using Feeder. Or as noted previously, even returning to the home screen it can happen.

Thanks for the Google Support thread, I had not seen that.

Hi. I can reliably trigger this, or new bug that causes same thing and it's appear everytime if I want. Build 2024120900 on Pixel 8 Pro.
I don't know if this setup of mine affects this bug or not, so I share it:
Developer option on, navigation gestures enabled.
        Screen sensitivity does not matter
        Screen protector does not matter
Main, or secondary profile does not matter
Screen Timeout time does not matter, but change it to 15 seconds to lower wait times to replicate this.

Behavior of 15s screen timeout should be that after last touch, after about 12 seconds, screen dimms. After another about 3s, display goes off.
        So.

        1. Unlock your phone
        2. Go to settings
        3. Go to home screen
        4. Wait until screen dimms and when it does, touch it to prevent phone sleep and continue with step 2.

When You will loop those steps 2 to 4, then after 2 to 4 loops, screen stay on forever.

This I can replicate even in newly created secondary profile for this purpose.

Can anyone confirm this? Thank you.

BRNko When You will loop those steps 2 to 4, then after 2 to 4 loops, screen stay on forever.

I think I recall that this is a feature. I don't think the screen will remain on forever, more like 10 minutes. And my memory is that this is a reading mode, i.e., if you cancel a dimming two or three times in a row the system believes you are trying to read complicated text and allows you more time.
