Hey guys,

I've been a long time user of Samsung phones and contemplating on buying a Pixel 7 Pro, exclusively to be able to install GrapheneOS. My phones have always been rooted and deGoogled (running microG) but I've always been fond of GrapheneOS due to their particular approach on privacy (specifically sandboxing Google apps). I'm ready to jump the fence but I'm really concerned about the Pixel 7 Pro having sooo many complaints about overheating. I would really appreciate some first-hand advise from Pixel 7 Pro users. Thanks!

Trebuchet changed the title to Pixel 7 Plus - is overheating a real problem? .

My Pixel 7 Pro has never overheated, but I have no clue if yours will, since I don’t know how you will use it.

With my use case and the device I have, I have NEVER felt that my device was too hot, overheating, or anything like that. Literally one time since I had this device, I did notice that the battery was draining exceptionally quick, but a simple reboot fixed it and it's never happened again.

I've had mine for about 6 months now (brand new Pixel 7 Pro from Google, GOS from day 1). I use anywhere from 1 to 8 hrs screen time depending on what's going on that day, but probably average about 4. My screen is always set to 60hz. I keep my phone in a black Spigen Tough armor case with a screen protector. I don't often use my phone while it's charging but I do occasionally. My phone is always in battery saver mode and almost all the apps I use are PWAs (progressive web apps). I ended just days with 40-60% battery which is on par with what I was getting with most of my Samsung devices.

I came from about 10 years of loyal Samsung usage with the S21 Ultra being my latest. Overall, I'm VERY pleased with the switch. There are a few minor gripes that I have (don't like Google's swipe navigation, quick tiles aren't as nice as Samsung, etc), but they're minor and don't bother me nearly as much as they used to.

I now recommend this phone to almost everyone. I can't speak to the experience running the stock OS but the benefits that come from GOS make any minor rubs insignificant.

Mine gets hot af and then the screen dims randomly, which I believe to be an attempt to cool off, although I can't verify that. I noticed the heat in the few days between when I first received the device and when the case came.

    Hi Trebuchet,
It was similar for me, but in recent years I always used the latest iPhone top model.
Because Apple sells our customer data just like Google and others, I had then thoroughly informed myself about more privacy-friendly operating systems and there was only one choice: GrapheneOS and therefore also the Pixel 7 Pro – with a comparatively (!) low performance processor and therefore the danger of overheating.

But my practical experience since buying it in March 2023 has been positive:
Since I don't use any games and don't use a case that could cause heat build-up when charging or in high summer temperatures, the Pixel 7 Pro never gets hot.

I don't use true fast charging either, but charge the battery using the USB cable on the MacBook Air, which doesn't charge the battery in the Pixel 7 Pro slowly, but not too quickly either.
The highest temperature during charging (with simultaneous streaming of TV shows) is 40 °C there.
Without streaming while charging, the temperature remains at max. 38 °C.

And a few words about the comparatively underpowered processor:
Apple had to develop a much more powerful processor to achieve the goal of client-side scanning of images and documents without clients noticing or being disturbed by it.
Now their processors are really the world's very fastest effective in this area.
In comparison, Samsung's processors are lame slugs.
But does that bother us, who love data protection and privacy and do not activate the spying and tracker functions thanks to GOS?
    – No! And for normal use, an Exynos processor aka Google Tensor G2 is super fast and completely sufficient. And it doesn't get too hot. :-)
