I’d love to get thoughts around location privacy and share some of my concerns around it.
It appears from forum discussions many ppl have concerns around location privacy and specifically keeping this private from Google. Much discussion around alternative mapping software, etc…
However, I believe carrier (SIM) privacy is way more obtrusive, hard to defend against, and not discussed much. I’m not sure if the lack of discussion is simply because it’s too hard a problem to solve, but carriers have historically handed over or sold this information readily to many parties.
Your carrier usually knows your billing/shipping identity (if you don’t have something like an anonymous SIM card), they know your IMEI (device fingerprint), and they have a continuous feed of your coarse location. I can’t imagine these data points aren’t being fed to the likes of google already, and they certainly are being sucked up and recorded indefinitely by all the spy agencies, police forces, highest bidders around the world.
I don’t have a great solution in mind although I imagine there are folks much smarter than me around here who may have ideas. VoIP solutions seem like they could help a bit when combined with a vpn and purchasing a SIM card anonymously solely for data usage (no legacy calls/texts).
