When I connect SSD to perform a backup, I cannot file transfer. How fix?

I can't change the connection from "Charging external device" to "File transfer." I have developer mode enabled, and file transfer set as default USB option, but it appears that the SSD is controlling the connection, so I cannot change the mode from my phone. I have replicated this on two SSDs. How can I fix it?

freezet Or use a properly formatted drive that is being recognized by the phone. But then it is kinda defeating the point of such a drive. USB sticks of size as big as your internal storage are cheaper than SSD drives anyway.

By any chance, could you share what ssd reader are you using and what file system has it been formated? It could also be silly thing like a cable...
