Well, I wonder what is the criteria to stop a release from being promote to the Stable channel. There have been several reports here of slowness, at least for the Pixel 8. If anything, more people will start to notice it.

Alpha channel

P8a has no bugs, only minor issues after the reboot. Default account only.

The only side effect remaining, is that Tor browser Alpha does not connect automatically anymore. Not a big deal.

It is faster since 2 builds now.

This time when I downloaded the update it fail to install, so it download again and installed the update and restarted w/o any issues. The wifi works date also works as well.

Started using security preview build from alpha channel on my 9PF and so far did not run into any problems luckily. Hope that your reported issues can be sorted out properly soon 🤔

iyanmv There are reports of the same issues upstream for Android 17 QPR1. It's triggered by people having certain configurations and doesn't impact most people. We're not going to block upstream updates with security patches based on upstream issues present in the stock OS, especially when it's caused by having a certain configuration. Several people who reported it said turning off developer options, switching back to the default launcher or disabling an unnecessary accessibility service resolved it.

GrapheneOS as I said above, I don't have any of those things enabled. Default launcher, developer options off and no accessibility options either. So it must be something else. More people above also reported this.

GrapheneOS can you at least point us to the upstream reports you are mentioning, so I can try to understand what might be special about my settings/setup?

@GrapheneOS Same here—the developer options are disabled, as are the accessibility services. I switched to the default launcher, but I'm still experiencing slowness issues.

If I enable the default launcher and disable accessibility services it's snappy again. But the interesting aspect is the fact that it remains snappy after I re-enable those things again until the next reboot.

For anyone experiencing slowness,

Switch back to default launcher, no critical accessibility tools, developer options off

Then reboot the phone

After rebooting, you can see if you can re-enable any of these things or see which 1 is the issue. It might work great until the next reboot.

but I think the only thing GOS has from QPR1 is Google firmware. So, for the WiFi not connecting issue and slowness, it's another thing that seems to stem from Google's lowering in quality that I have witnessed.

The Motorola partnership is looking better. Qualcomm would provide a lot of the firmware for Motorola, Samsung, etc

I was experiencing this sluggishness on my Pixel 8. (security preview release)
I had no accessibility options enabled, and using default launcher, have disabled all developer options over a year ago. Two reboots hadn't helped

But I had an old work profile that I haven't been using.
So I reinstalled Shelter, found that it wasn't required to delete the work profile (I had already lost the ability to manage the work profile due to uninstalling Shelter earlier). Then uninstalled Shelter, deleted the work profile and rebooted.

Then there was a brief app optimization step after the reboot, and things seem back to normal again.

So I'm not sure if it was work profile related, or it just needed the additional reboot.

You can find many more reports if you look for it. It definitely doesn't appear to have anything to do with GrapheneOS. We aren't going to leave the Pixel drivers outdated with unpatched security vulnerabilities due to a regression for a very small subset of users. We also aren't going to stop doing releases because of it. It's clearly caused by having a specific setup since most users aren't impacted.

Developer options, accessibility services, other accessibility options, alternate launchers and work profile management apps are all potential causes. It may be an issue specific to secondary profiles. There may be multiple ways to trigger it. It's not happening for most users and definitely impacts a subset of users on the stock Pixel OS too. There's no point in blaming us for it.

Multiple rude comments towards us have been removed. Those do the opposite of having us prioritize these upstream bugs not impacting most people.

@Stewart @Tequs @nashgraph @jasondaigo and rest of people having performance issues: deleting the cache of the launcher and system ui apps seemed to help in my case.

I was waiting to enable the security patch. We run Graphene by default, one app has been replaced only: HeliBoard, which looks a lot like Gboard.

Same for settings parameters: default.
