Vela Maps - Alternative front end for google maps.

Where does the map on Vela Maps come from – Google Maps? It would have been nice if the maps came from OpenStreetMaps but the real-time traffic data from Google Maps.
Mind you, I don’t really know how it all works.

Stewart I'm pretty sure that exactly how it does work. Maps from open street maps and traffic data from Google.

mmmm Yes, that’s what I thought too. The problem is that the POIs for an area I’m familiar with bear no resemblance to the OpenStreetMap data – they’re missing, aren’t in the right place, and so on. It’s rather odd (I’m using Organic Maps and Magic Earth to compare).

PimpinPumpkin thanks for your explanations and your efforts! That also explains why it kept loading POIs although I blocked any google connections. Looking forward to be able to search POIs fully without google and navigating there with Osmand, cheers!

@PimpinPumpkin one more thing: Vela shows more bus stops than google maps, which is awesome (even type of bus and timings!). However, it takes literally 5-10 seconda for the bus stops to load, which is very unfortunate if I want to check fast to see if a certain place has bus stops. 1) where does the data come from and 2) could this loading be sped up?

there are still a lot of connections to google as i can see.

it is probably out of scope of this application, but from the privacy point of view, it would be great if vela would support http or even socks5 proxies.

vela maps became my main map app. i like the speed and that you implemented your own design and processes.

It is great that you are able to get data from google, it works great. ideas for privacy improvement:

having a setting option not to load reviews automatically but by clicking "show reviews"
having a setting option not to load traffic infos automatically but by clicking on a "traffic icon"

You are able to use Vela with Orbot for example right now. I'm not going to bake it into Vela because Google degrades exit nodes and data centers with limited data. It would probably always be breaking and finicky. Even through my testing and development I've managed to screw myself a few times on a few devices.

I'm working on making it optional to load reviews via a button like you are saying. I'm all for cutting down on Google queries, both for privacy but also so Vela doesn't get screwed.

Regarding traffic, the actual routing itself is run through Google unless you turn that off (there's a setting to use Google for nothing). The traffic and the routing are one in the same, so not really a point in separating it out if we have to hit Google anyways.

If you have any future ideas or bugs, please submit them on Github, that's where I'm tracking everything.

Regarding traffic, routes come from the open router. Google is only asked for live traffic times (and to steer around jams). The 'Use Vela without Google' setting turns that off entirely, and I'm adding an option to fetch traffic only when you tap for it.

From my testing, yes. If you are still having this issue, please submit an issue request on Github and I'll fix it. I do have a new stable release dropping soon with a week's worth of changes from the canary branch and the nightlies. You can pre-emptively update to either of these branches too.
