The dilemma of VPN

Clarke Orbot and TOR are not VPN's. They are proxy servers. Also, PrivateDNS settings do not work with these 2 options.

If using a VPN, it really should be used with a Private DNS, like AdGuard or Quad9.

Orbot takes the place of a VPN, a VPN is a glorified proxy.

There's no benefit to this and it makes you stand out, use the network-provided DNS servers by default.

GrapheneOS . It's very poorly implemented and the developers have a history of writing insecure code and not being trustworthy. We recommend avoiding it. Tor Browser doesn't depend on Orbot, but is problematic for other reasons.

The post is from 2024, maybe it's outdated and Orbot team got better? They do update the app. Is there any current vulnerability we know about with Orbot? The GrapheneOS team also say Tor isn't recommended, so what's worse to use Orbot or Tor?

How Proton is better than Orbot? Orbot keeps IP anonymous and with Vanadium the privacy gets better. Since Mullvad isn't free and you pay for it there is finanacial fingerprint.

I use Orbot I also use Tor VPN and Tor VPN beta.
They all work fine.
They all consume battery at a stupid rate.

anononetwo Proton VPN is not fully FOSS. Their apps/clients you use from Proton are FOSS, but the VPN network is not FOSS.

This does not matter, because it is impossible to verify what runs on someone else's computer. On my computer, I expect to run my own Wireguard client, and wouldn't use a vendor's client, FOSS or not.

tux_ Exactly, i do the same with mullvad wireguard with local sharing and DAITA on my 20yo laptop with FreeBSD that i use for testing, it's amazing how much you can get for 5$ a month with them on 5 different devices, I really don't get what the fuss is all about :D

tux_ Never said if it mattered or not. Just posting what Proton states. As I stated, use Tor as opposed to a VPN (even using your own client) for high threat model.
