If that were so easy, I would use the original, no doubt. But the stubborness of the Signal team to implement alternative methods for notifications, remove the reliance on Play Services and their slow adaption of crucial features - like local backups on iOS - is reason enough to support a project - Molly - that does exactly this.
A messenger that prides itself on security and priacy should work properly on a truly private and secure OS such as GrapheneOS without cheap hacks such as Google Play for notifications. Instead, we get crap like "stories" and some bullshit crypto payment system which nobody asked for.
They keep labeling users who ask for UnifiedPush support as a "vocal minority", when in reality it's the people who understand the necessity of such a feature. They keep gaslighting their user base with excuses that supporting UP would somehow require them to "support infrastructure" as if the implementation by Molly does require any of that.
If they don't care about their most loyal users (which I assume will disproportionately also be GrapheneOS users) and ignore their wishes, I'll ignore my urges to donate any money to them and fund Molly instead. It's that simple. And yes, it's a damn shame that Nuttso has to maintain the project on their own and I can hardly imagine they wouldn't prefer help. It's just not available right now.
