santy What works for me is starting the chat transfer to a second phone. This logs you basically out of WhatsApp on the first phone. You don't have to do the actual transfer, just abort the process before it starts. Then register your phone number again with the first telephone. This seems to "reinitialize" things and for me it's working then again. Remember to revoke the extra permissions WhatsApp asks for during the process.

I am doing this after each GrapheneOS release currently.

How exactly did you do this?
I will do the following, if you confirm:

Backup my chats via PC
Install WhatsApp in the hidden space via Playstore
Deinstall WhatsApp in the main profile
Install WhatsApp via their website apk
Setup WhatsApp in the hidden profile, but stop the setup process after entering my phone number
Setup WhatsApp on the main profile
If necessary, backup the chats from the PC

snafu Thanks @snafu. Just to confirm that this method worked for me. Although some of the sent messages in the queue (with the clock icon) were finally released and delivered, I cannot retrieve the incoming messages blocked with message "Waiting for this message. This may take a while." that it is still showing.

I could not link any device using WhatsApp Web with the QR code, whereas using the phone number worked. I have then removed GPS and the additional permissions and all seems to work ok for now (fingers crossed).

I fixed my issue by reinstalling via sandboxed play store. I couldn't restore any messages though, even locally.
I've also noticed I'm not getting signal messages until I open the app. Battery optimization is disabled

Seems that way. I'm running into the same issues since WhatsApp update 2.26.20.72 and onwards too: can't send/receive messages anymore ("waiting for this message" on most of the received messages). Haven't tried running the app with Google Play Services enabled yet, but good to know that that will likely fix it. Hoping there will also be be a non-GPS required fix though...

For me it's only WhatsApp btw, Signal still works fine without GPS (app version 8.13.2)

2.26.18.72 works fine and I'll leave it installed until further notice that the problem has been resolved. Maybe you guys can revert to this version instead.

On my end since it is still working fine. Still no GPS installed in the owner profile.
Since my last comment the only thing I changed is switching the WhatsApp installation to the website directly (using obtainium) instead of Aurora. It means I'm now using the 2.26.22.74.
I also got the latest GOS update and I'm not facing any issues.
You can try what I tried and hopefully it can work for you.

RandomGosSupporter Would you mind sharing your obtainium config for WhatsApp? I tried to get updates from whatsapp directly instead of from Play Services in Private Space, but couldn't figure out how to do it.

I don't remember where I found the procedure.
In short:

add an app using the source url https://www.whatsapp.com/download
pick the override source as html
remove the header that has been put by default and add the following instead
sec-fetch-size: none

That was enough for me if I remember correctly

I managed to recover my WhatsApp account and chats after the recent issue, so I’m posting my experience in case it helps someone else.

My situation:

Main phone: GrapheneOS, WhatsApp without Google Play Services.
WhatsApp suddenly stopped working properly:
- outgoing messages stayed on the clock icon;
- some incoming messages showed “Waiting for this message”;
- I could not update my profile picture;
- I could not even send a support message inside WhatsApp.
I was still logged in at first, so I avoided uninstalling/clearing data for a while.
I had a local backup of my WhatsApp folder on my laptop.

What eventually worked for me:

I used a second GrapheneOS phone (and made a new profile) and installed sandboxed Google Play Services there.
- Then I installed WhatsApp from the official APK.
- I entered my phone number and verified it.
- WhatsApp worked normally on that second phone with Google Play Services present.
- Messages sent properly and the account seemed usable again.
I then tried moving WhatsApp back to my main phone.
- At one point I verified by phone call/SMS code.
- My account became active again on the main phone.
- Sending messages worked again.
- However, my chat history was missing/empty.
To recover the chats, I used my old local WhatsApp backup from my laptop.
Important: I had previously copied my old WhatsApp folder from:
Android/media/com.whatsapp
On the main phone, I uninstalled WhatsApp.
After uninstalling, the com.whatsapp folder was gone, which is expected.
Before opening WhatsApp again, I coppied the com.whatsapp folder
Android/media/com.whatsapp/WhatsApp
After that, I installed WhatsApp again and opened it.
I verified my number again.
WhatsApp found the local backup and offered to restore it.
I selected Restore.
My chats came back successfully.

Important warnings:

If you are still logged in, make a full copy of Android/media/com.whatsapp before doing anything destructive.
Reinstalling can be risky because some users get the “official WhatsApp” / login block afterward.
In my case, using a second GrapheneOS phone with sandboxed Google Play Services allowed the number/account to work again.
After the account worked again, the missing chats were solved by restoring the local Databases/Backups folders during WhatsApp setup.
This is just what worked for me. I have no idea how long this will be working for

I also should add that I started to experience issues with Whatsapp as i updated end of May, start of June. Crashing (kind of a lot), notifications do not work at all anymore compared to "just works" the weeks / months before. No other issues I've noticed so far.

I have Whatsapp installed from their website.

To note, this broken behaviour today is the exact behaviour of an up-to-date Whatsapp install January - March with Google Play services disabled after setup (with Google Play Services on at the moment of setup when it used to recognize GPS availability)

Has a reinstall yielded fruitful results for anyone,
in terms of no issues with notifications, crashing, other issues (without Google Play Services)?

I solved that disabling the hardened memory allocator for the app.
Also be aware that if you install Whatsapp from Aurora store using anonymous login you often get an account with beta software enable and your apps could be updated with beta versions breaking things.
Better use a throwaway account specifically for Aurora store.

Hi,
I've had the same problem. This is what I did :

update Whatsapp with the apk from their website on my main profile (no GSF)
clone it to my work profile which has the GSF (no network access).
activate Whatsapp there (received one message OK)
activate Whatsapp back on my main profile : received 2-3 message OK so far.

Hope it stays good.
I also managed to configure Obtainium, thanks for the helpful messages here.
