  • Considering moving to GrapheneOS but I have some questions

So I got a new android phone last year but with the move to totallion control across the globe, I've started really changing my ways and locking things down... I'm considering getting a pixel and installing grapheme os on it but there's a few things I need to work out.

I use nordvpn, I use Plex, steam for 2fa authentication and Google authenticator. I need all of these carried over in some way. From what I can tell I would need to install the play store but that kind of defeats the entire point of graphene os.

If I can't use Plex, steam 2fa and 2fa in general with the apps I do and some form of hosted VPN I will still have to use this current device, which kind of makes the move pointless.

How likely is it that all these use requirements (VPN,Plex,steam,2fa) are possible on Graphene? I could renegade this device to a Plex and 2fa device but it seems wasteful.

What I've seen in The Hated One video on youtube (I don't use Graphene OS, just considering to move) you can use multiple profiles on Graphene OS and in each of them put specific functionality like launching a profile with running Google account in sandbox or account for social media. Each of them limited with permission and access to local data.

Purpose of GrapheneOS is providing great privacy and security. Not having Google apps and services included in the OS is a minor part of that.

GrapheneOS is not a device focused on 'degoogling' as the term is realistically a misnomer.
GrapheneOS is for everyone. Using our Sanboxed Play Services compatibility layer secures Play Services in the standard user space sandbox that all apps are subject to with NO privileged system access and NO ability to constantly be submitting telemetry etc in the background. They are entirely restricted to the permissions and data you decide to give them.

Also as mentioned above, all of this and apps dependent on them can be isolated and secured away from a main profile dedicated to day to day use and others with sensitive info. However keep jumping between profiles may be inconvenient.
That being the case you may wish to experiment downloading your required apps into a normal user without them using Aurora Store to see if they will or won't function without them in the first instance.

I would also advise attempting to move your 2FA to an open source alternative such as Aegis.

Hi guys, thanks for the very valuable input. I'm quite happy to switch between profiles. Is signal on whatever the default store is?

MetropleX thanks I'll have to look this up but I appreciate that detail. Pondering whether to grab a 6 pro as I want that optical zoom or wait for the 7 pro
