I've started using GrapheneOS on a brand new Pixel 7 recently. I was disappointed to find out that since I am using Google Fi as a carrier, I cannot receive MMS messages without having the Google Fi app installed. This means I have to use sandboxed Google Play Services which I was hoping to avoid on the main account.

I have looked around the forums and seen others talking about using Google Play Services on alternate accounts only but this does not work for me as I don't want to always leave my phone on an alternate account in order to receive an occasional group text.

I know the ideal outcome would be to convert everyone I know to using Signal for messaging but that has not been easy. I am actively trying - it is more difficult than I thought it would be.

TLDR;
I am wondering what other services US consumers are using for cell service and which of those services do not require a proprietary application to be installed on the OS in order to receive MMS messages.

    Whenever and however Google can get a hook into you, they will.

    I would avoid Verizon.

      For historical reasons (coverage; family member with a Verizon Apple watch), I am on Verizon. The stock GrapheneOS message app works fine for me with a 6a on Verizon including MMS. Formerly a 3a worked too - not very well in mid 2019, but then it got better. Hotspot works too. I haven't tried visual voicemail but personally see no reason to experiment with it.

      GrapheneOS has some rough edges (backups!), but I don't want to turn my data over to Apple or Google. I appreciate a "third way" with real security updates, so I donate monthly (via GitHub).,

      Some additional information or basis for this statement would be helpful

      I think most US carriers don't need any proprietary apps for MMS to work, at least the big ones AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile.

      I would agree. I've never needed a carrier app on any of the big carriers in the US.

        That's good to know. I was thinking about trying AT&T out but just wanted to see what other users were doing before making a decision.

        Thanks all, seems like it might just be Google Fi that requires their app for basic text messaging functions.
