i've received a notification that fdroid is under thread by google.
is that true?

Not f-droid directly, but installing applications without Google's consent in Google-verified Android distributions (i.e. any phone that came with Play Store pre-installed)

just to clarify, this won't directly affect GrapheneOS and similar non-Google AOSP forks. Keyword here being directly, as the ramifications could be that this has a chilling effect in developing apps Google might not be a fan of even if the developer wouldn't distribute via the Play Store in the first place

It sounds like in order for you to access/download the android libraries/sdk/etc youd need to verify first.

My feeling is that F-Droid and Accrescent (and other non-google entities) need to be placed under the GOS ecosystem.

It won't be long (after the Android app developer restrictions come into effect in September) that NO apps from the Play Store will install on non-google android phones.

It also wouldn't surprise me if mobile carriers restrict non-google/non-apple phones from connecting.

It's clear to me the direction google is heading with app developer restrictions and locking down the AOSP tree.
My post isn't an attempt to warn people off GOS, but rather an acknowledgment that the future of AOSP may be much different than it has historically been.
And perhaps to prepare before it actually happens.

It's fine (IMO) to speculate about things that might happen, but you should be clear that's what you are doing.
