Nym and Obscura seem to be doing what Safing/Portmaster are doing. Portmaster unfortunately has become difficult to use as of late, at least on Linux, so I haven't been using it.

gk7ncklxlts99w1 good luck! RethinkDNS was a hefty learning curve for me. Three things above all got me into the excited, more enthusiated phase;

The recent update 0.5.5.u. This solved the uninstalled apps log remnants issue.
Having some mileage with the app got me realising how vast the scope of it actually is and that it performs, not only the things I expected out of my previous use of 'adblockers' and anti-'tracking'-apps, but beyond this baseline, RethinkDNS does this without even the slightest bit of 'You are already safer than most normies after flipping our switch, but if you step into adb, root, Shizuku, we will 'protect your privacy' even better. Here's how you should go ahead and gain root'
And the final thing that totally triggered a quantum leap for my understanding of this app, as obscured that it may come across from the plurality of real world disciplines that it takes on and does it good; was a serious response to things in the app I found confusing. In little more than a day, devs provided a good answer and, since this is about arguably complex goals and solutions hard to implement in easily used software for every user, - a nice discussion immediately was started about it.

@ignoramous P.S, I took a look at portmaster's android app and it appears it's no longer in active development or at least stalled. I recently heard about Nym and Obscura which appear to do similar things. I'm curious if you've looked into partnering with any of these companies to incorporate their unique VPNs into Rethink. A few years ago I made this recommendation with Portmaster though nothing came of it. Although competition is good, I just don't see a need for another Android VPN, which is why I'm not unhappy that development has stalled. I also would like to continue using their SPN but the portmaster desktop app is annoying to use nowadays.

Obscura supports exporting WireGuard configuration, and so, importing that into Rethink should make it work? Their FAQ notes that their server-side multi-hop applies to exported configurations.

As for Nym, I'm unsure if they support vanilla WireGuard, but if they did, Rethink should be able to connect to their servers just fine.

Besides, Rethink has multi-hop capabilities built-in into the client. You can import, say, Windscribe (£3/mo on BYOP) + Mullvad (£5/mo) and hop Mullvad over Windscribe or vice versa for £8/mo (the same rate as Obscura).

In the upcoming version, v055v, Rethink will integrate with Windscribe for auto-imports of their WireGuard (for a nominal fee) and in a version or two after, we plan to turn on our relays (which are a bit expensive, so we are holding off on these for v1 even though the code is ready).

Because it used to work and it's not working for me for the longest time[1] (I'm running 0.5.5t), and looking at the various issues around it's not just 'me' problem :)

I'm just asking if you perhaps noticed "yep, u fixed the wireguard for me!" messages flying around :)

[1] I am NOT asking you to drop everything and investigate; basically wg-tunnel with the exact same configuration connects and it's usable. RethinkDNS connects and everything is just blocked, nothing goes out to the tunnel, nothing connects. I started from the basic/empty configuration. Yes, I plan on redoing it from scratch but it's very time consuming.

Novalissoide I can't praise Rethink enough. In terms of UI/UX, it's achieved what most cannot - a powerful feature set within an easy to use and aesthetically pleasing interface. Sounds easy to do but it really isn't. Other apps that have achieved this are Portmaster (desktop) and Notesnook. On the networking side it has everything I need and much more. Rethink recently received / about to receive 25k from floss.fund, this is a good indication that development will continue improving.

There is one very important thing missing that I really wish it could do, URL redirects. For example redirecting me to various privacy frontends.

WireGuard in Rethink has seen non-stop improvements for over 2 years now, and has been our key focus. Firewall / DNS functionalities have barely seen any new features. All that to say, WireGuard as implemented in Rethink has many failure modes fixed ... but may have many undiscovered still. Though, with v055u, folks seem to be more happy with it than sad.

We've also improved ability of folks to share/view diagnostics from Configure -> Settings -> App logs (the default log level is Error, but can be changed to Very verbose by tapping on the filter icon in the App logs search bar; this log level will flip back to Error after 3 hours to conserve resource use, especially battery).

Bearing in mind the sensitive nature of these verbose logs, if you're technical enough, you may find that feeding these to a popular LLM might help you sift through them & see what's going on for whatever it is you're debugging. WireGuard specific log lines usually have the tag string "wg" in them.

There's also a bunch of network / tunnel / WireGuard related state v055u shows in About -> Stats -> General (WireGuard stats are usually at the bottom of that UI). Like so:

This requires Rethink to MiTM TLS, if it is to cover redirection for all cases. Right now, our focus is mostly on WireGuard, and then later changing Rethink UI for Foldables and TV & moving to Material 3.

Additionally:

Use a browser with a good built-in adblocker
Setup the browser so that all links (from external apps for example) are open in private mode. The goal is that all cookies from those sessions will be deleted
You can also setup that only cookies for specific sites will be preserved (not sure about browsers on Android)
