I don't use Proton mail, never seen a proton mail addressed email in my inbox.
Irrelevant? To me yes... To millions of Proton Mail users? No.

I am one of those people. I have never received a single email with Proton in the sender field out of thousands of emails. I am also the only one in my circle of friends and family who uses a paid email provider (Posteo). But that's not really the topic here. I just wanted to say that these posts made me think more about encryption again and also provided me with useful information that I didn't have before. Thank you for that.

No we don't. Forcing people to be stuck to a provider is a fundamentally wrong approach. The issue is that the solution for encryption must be able to span across DIFFERENT and even UNTRUSTWORTHY service providers. Think about this; if you trust the service provider, why do you even need end-to-end encryption?

We already have the tools needed in order to implement end-to-end email encryption WITHOUT being bound to a service provider, and WITHOUT having to even trust them. The problem is that the tools aren't necessarily intuitive and the majority of people aren't even aware of them.

The focus therefore needs to be in educating people and improving the tools.

That's pretty much what Proton is trying to do in a different approach. If you use Proton and message someone using Proton, you don't need to care about the tools, you're safe by default. And if someone knows PGP and finds your key, they can email you, and when you reply Proton handles PGP by itself.

It is unintuitive and there is a learning curve, so people just aren't interested until they need to be.
In addition, PGP has many problems, e.g. no forward secrecy, so if one wants privacy then Signal is better than PGP.

And there lies the biggest problem to security/privacy.
Believing your'e safe by blind faith in your email provider.
Privacy/security comes at a high cost, you have to be diligent every time, an adversary needs only to be lucky once.

Both Proton and Tuta are very secure. Proton has more then 100 million users and more than 50,000 businesses. Tuta has a user base of over 10 million users (announced in June 2023). Tuta has experienced significant growth. In early 2025, Tuta reported a 148% surge in new paying customers.

You can use Password protected emails to send end-to-end encrypted emails to any email address with Proton and Tuta.

Tuta uses symmetric (AES 256) and asymmetric encryption (RSA 2048 or ECC (x25519) and Kyber-1024 as quantum-safe algorithms) to encrypt emails end-to-end. When both parties use Tuta, all emails are automatically end-to-end encrypted (asymmetric encryption). For an encrypted email to an external recipient, a password for encrypting & decrypting the email (symmetric encryption) must be exchanged once.

And yet all that, is useless when you send a Tuta mail message to an online store or whatever that uses Gmail, because your details then get backed up to Gmail servers, worse still your name and address you filled in for the delivery is now associated with your tuta email.. Its far too easy to unravel your diligently crafted anonymous online presence with an email provider you think is good, by not being careful who you send messages to.
The best option, which for most people is impossible, is to bin email and use e2ee messaging.

Both Proton and Tuta have email aliases. Proton also has a feature called “Hide-my-email aliases” that is specifically designed for logging into services.

The problem with e2ee messaging services is that you are completely locked into that service. Signal messages cannot be sent to users who do not have Signal.

That is what makes it so secure, each person is at a similar level of security/privacy. So the system works.

Yes they do...
try this, when logging in to Tuta,
just choose one of your alias address not your real address and use your current password and you will find that you log into your email account, that alias leads right back to your inbox....
So if you use up all 15 aliases, your email account now has 16 current usernames, not one.

I used Tuta, but left for something better,
My current username to log into my email was composed by a password generator and is not an email address.
