just want to add that same thing happened to me today after updating google camera. Second user profile without GPS. ~~Temporarily installed GPS with network permissions, started Gcamera app and it worked. Then uninstalled GPS and camera still works~~
Never mind above. It worked for a while but its crashing again. So looks like it needs persistent GPS

I tried that, and it didn’t work for me. It may have succeeded for you because the camera app was still running in the background. I’m curious to see what happens after you uninstall GPS, stop the pixel camera app, and then launch it again.

That’s the expected behavior, it only worked because the camera app never actually stopped running.

Is there anything to resolve, from their perspective? They already offer the possibility to use sandboxed Google Play, which solves the issue. They also offer GrapheneOS Camera, which does not require Play Services.

I ran into the same issue today and after briefly installing the sandboxed Google Play services (without network permission), I decided to downgrade the Google Camera app and delete the Play Services again. Not an ideal solution, but better than having those apps on my phone...

Wurzelmann maybe that's way to go. Could you explain how to install an old version?? Within Aurora I'm asked for a version number which I couldn't find via web search :/

Jojo I did it with Aurora actually. If you're using the manual download method, as described, it will automatically suggest the last version before the current one (9.9 in this case), so the version number provided is the one you need. I had to uninstall the Google camera app first, because an in-place downgrade was not possible.

EDIT: the version number for 9.9 is: "68469120" btw, in case someone else needs it.

Wurzelmann and to expand on this "solution": on Aurora's start screen, there's a menu in the top right-hand corner, where you can select the "blacklist manager". There you can select apps that will never download updates, which effectively blocks Pixel Camera app from updating automatically, just as a precaution.

As someone affected by the same problem, I wonder which one is the lesser evil between getting stuck on a progressively older (and insecure) version of the app or giving in installing the sandboxed GPS. I hate having to make such type of choices... Any suggestions?

santy i have been considering running sandboxed Google play without network access for reasons like this. I don't know enough about the potential downsides to that though, like how and how much google services collects about usage, whether that is accessible/exploitable by other apps, or whether the network permission can ever fail etc. Edit: maybe having Play Services without network can cause problems as apps might register for push notification with Play Services of they see its installed, but then it doesn't have network access

ZoraIsHere Not an expert, but I agree that blocking internet access would stop most (all?) direct attacks.

DeletedUser495 I agree with you as well. I presume that sandboxing should, at least, mitigate the problem. It doesn't seem to be a clear, better approach.
