Do we know if phone number verification and the associated Google account logged in to Google Messages is required for RCS to work?

GrouchyGrape I just recently was able to setup and use RCS without even using my Google account in the Messages app. This is in the US and on a non-graphene phone, but I would assume it's the same. RCS is now the carrier's responsibility, so shouldn't depend on Google at all.

Ive been testing RCS on this release. I was finally able to get it activated using an earlier build (and then updating to the latest one using Google Play), however, not much more than that.

I am unable to initiate RCS chats, nor am I able to receive RCS messages. When someone tries to message me, I don't receive the message unless they fallback to SMS/MMS. I tested with a spare Google Android phone with RCS confirmed working.

I am on Tello (which uses the T-Mobile network)

Update: A device reboot fixed it. RCS works!! God bless, you're angels.

Vuraze I'm also on a T-Mobile MVNO (Mint) and haven't had luck.

Updated to the alpha 2025100900 on an 8a. Play Services app was given Phone permission, Google Messages was downloaded then made default SMS app then given all privileges. I opened the Messages app, logged in, went to Messages settings > RCS chats, "Connecting..." and eventually "Trouble connecting. Awaiting retry..."

Edit: I've rebooted and will await RCS connection to retry to see if it works for me.

Try downloading and installing an older version of Google Messages using either Aurora Store or APKmirror. I used
messages.android_20241120_00_RC07.phone_dynamic (262371063)
I also gave Play services the SMS permission just to be on the safe side.

I used the specific version you mentioned, RCS settings were stating "Connected" however only SMS was sending. After updating the app via Play Store (but also after the RCS retry time, so that may have been a factor) I got a cluster of unrecoeved RCS messages and now can send RCS messages.

Others have had issues with long term RCS function, so we'll see what happens.

Vuraze This is working for me so far, also on T-Mobile. Only prob is Aurora doesn't have automatic updates and I'm unable to update via Play Store, but that's only an annoyance I guess.

Not sure if Messages needs updates too often

RCS successfully works, verified on 4 phones (two p7p, p8, p9p) all run GOS two separate carriers. This is all you need, fairly basic permissions: https://discuss.grapheneos.org/d/1353-using-rcs-with-google-messages-on-grapheneos/1187 If you haven't fiddled with anything since before it stopped working then all you need to do is apply the GOS update.

As for people installing old versions of google messages. DO NOT DO THIS all you will do is rate limit yourself and then it won't work at all. A version of Google Messages from 2024 certainly will not work correctly.

If you are rate limited, i suggest turning off RCS and disabling RCS https://messages.google.com/disable-chat for good measure. Come back in 3 days and try again.

For one of my devices that was rate limited, I turned RCS off on the 8th and tried again today and it worked instantly.

Installing now will check on p6p on Telus in Canada. I was getting error 3000 on previous builds.

I'll repeat the previous steps and report back, I'll try without carrier services first.

Bunts okay so it connected right away without carrier services and conversations converted to RCS automatically after a reboot. However RCS messages send but are not received.

MrRoboto1212 If you're unable to update the app from Google Play, that sounds concerning. Check the app's signature hash using AppVerifier (from Accrescent, which you can get from the GrapheneOS App Store) to confirm if you have the legitimate Google Messages app installed.

Here is the correct hash for you to verify:

If it doesn't match, then uninstall it, and possibly change your Google account password.
If it matches, then you don't need to worry. Manually updating through Aurora should be fine for now...

I downloaded that version of Google Messages(262371063) from Aurora Store and App Verifier doesn't recognize it. But I compared the hash and it matches so I assume I have the real one.

About updating the app on Play Store, I'm unable to either. I didn't know you could do that because it hasn't ever let me update any other apps from Aurora store.

There's aggressive throttling for Google Messages RCS activation attempts. You may simply need to wait if it's not working for you right away. Also make sure to grant the Phone permission to sandboxed Google Play services.

SillySaurus yup can confirm, Telus esim rcs working great here.

After it said connected and all my convos upgraded to rcs it did take a few hours for it to actually work but now it's working as intended.
