I have no illusions that sooner or later the EU becomes more totalitarian than China or North Korea.

I cannot predict the future, but I would want to argue that the EU has a long way to fall before it becomes more totalitarian than China or North Korea.

Freedom isn't a guarantee, it's something you fight for or it will be taken away.

Not sure why you would believe seeing more of the world would make you complacent to the early stages of government overreach. Most Europeans have seen much of the world.

People are nervous about this kind of thing for a couple of reasons

One being that these regimes don't just pop up overnight, they get that way gradually, one step at a time, pushing each step as reasonable and proportionate and teaching you to care less and less about your freedom as you hand it over bit by bit over a number of years.

The other being that well, there are indeed actual living people in China who use smartphones and rely on things like GOS to reduce the risk of flying a bit of free speech under the radar - so it's probably not helpful for them for us to be normalising mass surveillance either.

It won't be part of GrapheneOS either way. GrapheneOS does not include any end-to-end encrypted chat app or other end-to-end encrypted cloud functionality, so will not legally have to implement anything. GrapheneOS is entirely out-of-scope for the proposed law. It will only affect end-to-end encrypted chat apps you install yourself.

I open up onion share and drop that file into it.
I follow the simple to click steps and share the file on an encrypted web page.
I send you half the web address using signal.
you affirm receipt via session.
I send you the encryption key via briar
you affirm receipt via simpleX
I send the second half of the web address via whatapp
you open the file.
you and I abide by the ssbswr protocol Signal, Session, Briar, SimpleX, Whatsapp, then Read
so how does the EU chat control garbage stop me substituting a legitimate company sensitive file with employee details within, to evil as shit CSAM?
its not about CMAS, its about them being able to monitor you.
If they frighten you enough using CMAS, perhaps the population will go along with it. (slice one, of Salami politics)

Franckienogotobollywood Anyway I'm not worried that EU may impose backdoors. I don't believe that they ever will find a majority for that. As for client-side control, I wouldn't be so sure that they won't do it, since it appears a rather balanced way to fight criminality with a limited impact on privacy.

Don't worry about chat control, they won't implement client-side analysis tools, I think that, as usual, our politicians shake us a huge thing for everyone to watch, and in the end they will remove it from the text to put something smaller but very rotten. It's always like that. For our pensions it is exactly the same thing: in the end we will not retire at 67 but at 64 to avoid demonstrations on the other hand in very discreet ways retirees will be more taxed, fewer things are less reimbursed etc...
