Just responding and also mentioning I've not read deeply into this entire Digital Wallet topic. Lack of news reports I suppose. I might have focused too much on the age verification part.
ryrona I don't think this will be used for services that require age verification? Where did you get that from?
I opened the main page of the Github repo of the app.
Header of the ReadMe reads: (although, you've found some better source for that kind of info)
Age Verification (AV) Android application
About your first quote of me, in regards to electronic ID:
I'm aware that the linked app is a fork of a reference app for a digital wallet, so I get that part, but something like that already exists in multiple countries without any downsides.
My talk about fear and my distrust towards politicians is in reference to this:
The EU will decide which websites need permission to be visited. The next step will probably be to give permission to download applications.
With the following part of my post to diminish that in regards to the Digital Wallet, despite understanding that worry myself:
It's just another topic, time for that is when there is talk about a law like that.
(or the abuse of any existing law for that, I guess)
It's not intended to be against an option to identify yourself online, if it's actually necessary and reasonable.
As a German, we already do have online functionality - since 2017/2019 it's always activated unless you deactivate it - for our ID Cards and can fully identify ourselves with it, using an app or desktop application and NFC with the card and a PIN, therefore I didn't see any more options through this app than what already exists anyway.
It even allows verifying that your age is above/below any chosen age without providing the service itself with more information.
Didn't know Germany isn't completely behind in something digital and thought such things exist everywhere in the (at least western) EU.
I just hope it stays an available option if such a "Digital Wallet" is going to be introduced here, that it still allows using the ID card as the back-end for example, instead of permanently saving all identifying data on the device itself, if you choose so. Our current implementation doesn't require any attestation at all.
So: I'm in no way talking against an electronic ID, as long as it isn't abused - I'm actively using mine.
To open my banking account (possible with a handful of banks), or to use digital gov. services. Nothing more though, as barely any site implements it, nor do I visit/use anything that requires it. Games don't fall under any such requirements and importing more tasteful BRs/DVDs is a better option for me than low quality (hardcore) porn - old school.
ryrona But Germany have such age verification laws for pornography.
Here's an amusing fact, to the best of my knowledge: German porn sites left Germany for various countries, for example some moved to Cyprus, so they don't have to comply with that law. Pretty much all porn sites are accessible without age verification in Germany as of now: "Yes, I'm 18 or above".
