I've been trying to keep everything stripped down on my new Pixel with GrapheneOS. I'm basically avoiding apps with sneaky permissions and anything Google. However, I wanted to use an independent mail client because I sadly have a particular gmail account that I use quite often. I am testing out Thunderbird right now. And it works flawlessly. But trying to search anywhere else online in an attempt to find out if Thunderbird is truly safe or not just doesn't pan out. I'll leave it at that so I don't sound too harsh.

Can any Devs or people with experience vouch for this program or give me a legit reason to uninstall it? They claim open source and "privacy focused"...But that's basically like saying "all natural" in the 21st century.

I appreciate any input.

    The_Defector thunderbird is fine.

The Android app has nearly nothing to do with the desktop app. But both are good programs.

The question is, how did you install it?

Thunderbird Mobile is open source and based on K-9 Mail, which has had an excellent track record.

@missing-root - If it came off that way, I wasn't alluding to any desktop apps. Just looking for details on its permissions and possible scumbaggery on Android.

@TalentedQuill - This is what I was looking for. Appreciate the info.

slightly off topic, but for those of you that use K-9/Thunderbird, what email providers are you using? I am using Protonmail but that doesn't really allow for use of any third party clients.

I forgot to add that I installed the F-Droid version of Thunderbird.

chock-a-block, I had the same problem. I have a couple Proton accounts. But I didn't want to use their app. I tested all the standard web-based emails. They all seem to work with Thunderbird. Except for Proton, Tuta, etc.

      chock-a-block

      dismail.de
      mailbox.org
      cock.li
      startmail

There are lots of providers with different perks. Some allow mailbox encryption, which allows them to not store unencrypted mails of you. You can then decrypt them locally using TB+OpenKeyChain or TB desktop

And @The_Defector I cannot imagine that you have never heard of Thunderbird??? It is the single most common FOSS email program.

If you want to avoid fake apps, look on F-Droid...

I have heard of Thunderbird. But over the years, I simply didn't log into email using any of my old, rooted phones. I was curious if it had been safe.. or had been safe but was sold or was up to something shady. As many of these companies start out with good intentions and end up selling or doing a 180 when tempted.

In fact, I really only used my rooted phones for calls and texts. Occasionally listening to or watching something when enabling the appropriate app. With GrapheneOS, I've been trying things that I would usually just skip with a typical Android.

Interesting. Thunderbird is indeed a profit-allowed company, subsidiary of the Mozilla foundation.

But yes they have strong values and continue to be good.
