After several attempts, the app worked. No clear solution was found. It was installed from the WA website about 10 days ago. The last try was with:

VPN disabled
Internet through mobile network
DCL via memory disabled
Play integrity API blocked

I think we should ask the scammers how they install it with virtual numbers. They certainly have an easier way! 🤣

Same issue. I tried multiple times to use WhatsApp with the official APK and I can't register with a new phone number. "You need the official WhatsApp to log in". Really annoying... Thanks Meta....

I'm using Signal for 99% of my communications but sometimes need WhatsApp (even though i do not trust Meta/FB at all)....

Not sure if GrapheneOS developpers can make it work again properly? WhatsApp probably try to check something... Doesn't seem to be related to Play Integrity this time.

Problems like that make it complicated to recommend GrapheneOS for someone if widely used apps stop working....

Anyway, if GOS devs read this, thanks a lot for your excellent work. Until now, GrapheneOS was perfect for me.

I hope you can find a solution. It would be sad to have to go back to an iPhone :(

graphene1728372 if you are willing to disregard all security improvents GrapheneOS brings for mere 1% of your communications (that are perhaps not essential), you don't seem to see the forest for the trees or you are using GrapheneOS for wrong reasons.

Restricting your use of apps that are known to undermine security/privacy is one of the easiest ways to reduce user data collection, rather than going with your head against the wall and trying to make those apps work at any cost.

I am seeing WA advertising daily on terrestrial TV in the UK and several large spreads in the Times Newspaper how secure their app is. Are they suffering pushback from the public? Maybe Joe public's addiction to WA is reducing...

twitheatrophonic It can be used in GOS, the only problem I had is with syncing backups and that's solved by giving Play Services contacts permissions

Whatsapp was working fine until I update the app today. I have two numbers registered. I switched to second number and it crashed instantly. It crashes at launch now. Installed from whatsapp website in secondary profile with no google play services installed. Both the dynamic options and native debugging are allowed. Used the exploit compat option and didn't work. Haven't tried uninstalling and reinstalling the app yet. Have to use the chat transfer method, can't do that right now. Below is the log that I saved from the dialogue that appeared after the crash.

DeletedUser380 Beeper now has local chat networks with native end-to-end encryption which might be something to look into if issues keep happening, still proprietary though so choose what works well for your threat model. I also know of several other third party WhatsApp clients that use PWAs or something.

Did anybody find a reliable workaround for the initial topic problem yet? I installed GOS two weeks ago, along with WhatsApp in my private space (installed from Play Store, Play Services activated) and also received the "please install official app" error after sending the first text a few days ago.

Same issue here. Banned by Whatsapp right after getting a new simcard and changing phone number. I don't know if I'm unbanned or not, but now I get this message about using the official app when I try to register again.

Of course, WhatsApp support and ban appeals are completely useless, as is the norm for this kind of hateful big tech company. The best solution would be not to use that shitty app at all, but a lot of other people only use that.

brandy078 That’s the only way. As bad as it sounds, Signal users need to treat this like a religion. Just don’t tolerate any other messengers, unless they improve substantially, which is unlikely to happen.
