Whatsapp crashing

Hi!
Whatsapp was working fine until I update the app today. I have two numbers registered. I switched to second number and it crashed instantly. It crashes at launch now. Installed from whatsapp website in secondary profile with no google play services installed. Both the dynamic options and native debugging are allowed. Used the exploit compat option and didn't work. Haven't tried uninstalling and reinstalling the app yet. Have to use the chat transfer method, can't do that right now. Below is the log that I saved from the dialogue that appeared after the crash.

Nvm I installed it after uninstalling, it is working now.

I have the same issue. It started with not being able to send to groups, and now doesn't open at all with the same error.

A bit reluctant to reinstall without an up to date backup.

Same problem here. After updating yesterday it worked for a short while and now crashes every time. With some perseverance (killing the app, clearing cash and so on) it seems possible to get into settings on random occasions and run a backup.

Also reluctant to reinstall though, even with a backup as the error suggests some kind of database issue.

midnightcrepe Thanks for the tip! Can you explain a little more what you did? I can't seem to get in, regardless of how many times I clean cache and force stop

Fwiw I installed via obtanium, although I understand its the same version (binary?) as the play store.

Exact same problem here. Also reluctant to reinstall since I'm not sure if I enabled backups or not. Does anyone know if WhatsApp does local backups automatically? I read conflicting things online.

It does, but looking at the database folder I don't think mine ran last night (ie because of this issue).

If this is related to group messages, I think inability to open the app occurred once a member of a group sent a message to that group.

TechWithoutMac Thanks! I think our problem is that we can't open WhatsApp to do a backup, otherwise it's a good guide.

bbog67 I see your point. Maybe it is possible to copy the WA folder without triggering a backup before.

As I mentioned if you persevere opening mine seemed to stay open for enough seconds to run a backup. It's intermittent in that this only seems to work like 1 in 20 times, or it could be time related like when a background service is active app crashes - and then maybe it doesn't run for 30 seconds or so. YMMV.

Still, if you have scheduled backups running you can at least go back to then. Running off a recent backup I was able to uninstall, delete all data, and then reinstall and restore from backup. To do so copy whatsapp.com folder before uninstall, then copy it back to Android > Media before reinstall.

Again, the scheduled backup from last night didn't run for me, so going this route this might take you back to 3am Thursday.

I freshly installed WhatsApp on two phones and it gave the same crash error. I was running on Akita. Weirdly i have my update on my personal phone and that one still works.

So seems that the common denominator might be the manual install of a version that is ahead of the playstore, so this may not be a Graphene issue.

spammy I'm not so sure. Fwiw another app that I have called AppBlock crashes with the exact same error (something about SQLite). And I installed it from the Play Store on the owner profile. It might be related to the fact of using it on a secondary profile (but I don't know if that's a common denominator amongst all of us)

bbog67 No i use the main profile on 1 phone and the second phone it happens also on the shelter profile

Did appblock get an update? If not then I'm not certain this is related.

My actual thought is that the new version of WhatsApp is faulty, but only we know about it because we manually install it.

I got it working by uninstalling and reinstalling it, unfortunately, thus losing a day and half of messages.

FYI I ended up making a zip file of the /Android/media/com.whatsapp/WhatsApp folder, exporting it onto my computer, uninstalling WhatsApp (from the specific user profile) and then reinstalling it on the same user profile. It was the exact same .apk file that I had updated WhatsApp with earlier but wasn't working. Then, before opening WhatsApp, I copied back from my computer the .zip file and extracted the contents to where I had taken them from. I signed up again for WhatsApp with the same number, it detected the backup and I got back my account. Thanks to everyone for their help and suggestions. Something changed in Graphene, I believe, because AppBlock didn't get any updates, it just stopped working after the latest OS update.

Does app block work after the same reinstall cycle? A storage wipe should have the same effect.
