I am all for keeping my identity from service providers... not because I need to but because I feel they collect too much info already.

If it is a brand new tablet, does that obviate the need to update to latest version of OS? Or will the install process require the tablet to update as a precaution anyway?

If I don't need to update, I will only be connected via usb to a laptop with vpn which is onel an office network... does this keep them at a sufficient distance?

On a phone, Google will be able see the hardware device identifiers, plus your IP address.

So Google could associate those identifiers to your location. If your location is also closely associated to your identity...

For a tablet without a cellular modem, I don't see much of an issue.

Is tethering from my 6a preferable? Presumably the ISP can't collect info on tethered devices?

In this case, Google is the concern, not really the ISP.

But tethering through a device that might already be associated to your identity seems pointless. Better to use your work network directly.

FaberCastell it's not about that but about being able to change your location by using network of your mobile device. If you use VPN, remember that tethered device's connection will not be included so you may have to sideload and setup VPN app on it first. Oh sorry, in fastboot mode the OTA image is downloaded by the host device, my bad.

FaberCastell when you first run it, it is on privileged stock OS. Once you install GrapheneOS, various security and privacy mitigations are applied. So the installation of GrapheneOS should also take place in an environment previously mentioned, unless you don't mind location of your residence being linked with hardware and software IDs, possibly some hardware performance values. I am no expert on this.

FaberCastell A youtube frontend like Grayjay or Newpipe, now that you have a larger screen.

And something like Localsend if you plan to use the tablet as a backup for your phone.
My tablet works as my laptop and stays at home, so I don't carry many files on my phone with me. I could lose it.

Have been using newpipe on an android tablet for a few years, but I find it quite buggy... I think it is youtube restricting it somehow.
Will give Grayjay a go, and take a look at Localsend too :)

FaberCastell Grayjay has better workarounds for Google's restriction. That's why I uninstalled Newpipe.

Sometimes, I just open the video in Brave Browser. Without a Google account. At least no ads there too.
