  • ringtones and notifications in profiles...

trying to figure out ringtones in profiles. i use a bare owner profile with nothing installed, then a main daily driver profile in a secondary profile.

i changed the default ringtone in the secondary profile but when i receive a call it just does a different ringtone (maybe default)?

how can i have each profile have a different ringtone?

also one other profile question...

in the owner profile, what permissions are required for the "phone" app and the Messaging app to ensure everything works with other profiles?

thank you!

just following up on if anybody has info on secondary profile ringtones and also on owner profile permissions for messaging and phone and how those interact with secondary profile phone/messaging use and notifications.

First of all, the secondary profile needs phone/message permission in the user config.
At least for messages I got notifications from owner profile as well as the active (secondary) profile for each message. Therefore I revoked notification permission for the owner.
To shut up the owner in other situation as well, I activated do not disturb mode. However, I'm not aware of clashing ringtones between profiles.

I guess my question is for the owner profile what permissions are required for the messaging/phone to work in OTHER profiles.

like if it do not give owner messaging SMS access then secondary profile cannot get texts. what other permissions are required in owner for the respective apps to work in other profiles.

I've tested secondary profile ringtone several times and cannot get it to work.

Notvsure if i got the question right ;) Are you able to receive messages/calls in secondary user at all?
As tried to mention before, you have to grant phone/message permission in the user settings (not app settings) for the secondary profile. These permissions can be only provided from owner profile.
Received messages are duplicated to all users that are allowed to receive messages.
I read that 3rd party message apps may only work in owner profile. Secondary profile works only with stock app. Not tested on my own.

yes I receive message and have permissions turned on in the user profile settings

I am asking about the individual app permissions in the owner profile. which owner profile app permissions are necessary for those apps to work in secondary profiles.

if you turn off SMS access permissions in owner profile messaging app, secondary profile cannot get texts EVEN THOUGH in the user profile the secondary profile has SMS allowed.

pinetree_raccoon I haven't played around with profiles enough to provide a definitive solution for you, but I believe that the phone calls and SMS functionality is a special class of app/permissions that is closely tied to the owner profile. I don't think you can disable these for the owner and expect them to continue working on secondary profiles.

There are three folders that serve purposes in Android:

      • Alarms: additional tunes/tones for the Clock app
      • Notifications: additional tunes/tones for customizing application notifications
      • Ringtones: for the phone app, Signal phone, and any other app that can make phone calls

I have two profiles on my phone: a "naked" Owner (Admin) profile and my personal user profile. In my user profile, I added my favorite tones into Alarms, Notifications, and Ringtones understanding that each folder has specific purposes. They work without issue and I configured my Settings and various apps with those in mind.

SMS ISSUES AND NOTIFICATIONS IN A USER PROFILE

      1. SMS only functions with the built-in Messages app in the Owner (Admin) profile as well as the User profile.
      2. The Messages texting app is ANCIENT HISTORY. When it starts, it displays a message that the app is made for an older version of Android(!). It has the most basic texting features and nothing more.
      3. Inbound SMS are "reflected" through the Owner (Admin) profile to the active user profile, however, the user profile receives the SMS with the default Notification (Settings > Sound & vibration), not the SMS notification I personally set in the Messages app. I say this because I set the JARVIS SMS notification in Messages, but each and every text I receive uses the default Notification. As a test, I set the JARVIS SMS notification in the Messages app in the Owner (Admin) profile as well as my own user profile: the Owner (Admin) profile plays the Jarvis SMS notification, but my user profile still plays the default notification.
      4. Google Play Services and AT&T's Visual Voicemail don't "see" the inbound SMS to auto-fill verification codes. As a result, the AT&T Visual Voicemail app will not register with AT&T. For other apps that used to be able to auto-fill the verification code through Google Play Services with the SMS permission, there is a workaround: manually complete the verification code. Luckily, I don't have to do that often.

dcd-graphenediscuss so are you saying if you download a different sms app in a second user profile the texts will not go to it but only the default app?

[deleted] That's EXACTLY what I'm saying.

I don't remember where I read it, but in this forum or another, it clearly stated that Messages was the ONLY app that could read SMS in user profiles. To test that, I did the following:

Test 1 - QKSMS in Both Profiles

          1. I disabled Messages in the Owner profile after installing and setting QKSMS as the default SMS app, and disabled any other SMS app.
          2. In the user profile, I installed QKSMS, set it as the default SMS app, and then disabled Messages and any other SMS app.

Results: I received NO texts in the User profile, but the Owner profile had texts in QKSMS.

Test 2 - QKSMS in Both Profiles; Messages enabled in the Owner (Admin) profile

          1. After installing QKSMS, I set it as the default SMS app, left other SMS apps enabled, including Messages.
          2. In the user profile, I installed QKSMS, set it as the default SMS app, and then disabled Messages and any other SMS app.

Results: I received NO texts in the User profile, but the Owner profile had texts in QKSMS.

Test 3 - Messages in the Owner (Admin) Profile; QKSMS in the User Profile

          1. In the Owner (Admin) profile, I ensured Messages was the default SMS application and disabled all other SMS apps.
          2. In the user profile, I installed QKSMS, set it as the default SMS app, and then disabled Messages and all other SMS apps.

Results: I received NO texts in the User profile, but the Owner profile had texts in the Messages app.

Test 4 - Messages in Both Profiles

          1. In the Owner (Admin) profile, I ensured Messages was the default SMS application and disabled all other SMS apps.
          2. In the user profile, I ensured Messages was the default SMS application and disabled all other SMS apps.

Results: I received texts in the User profile, but they came as standard Notifications, not as an SMS Text notification; the Owner profile had texts in the Messages app, too.

i am still having trouble with ringtones...
in the OWNER profile even if i set ringtone to "none" and in my secondary profile i set ringtone to a custom ringtone the phone rings with "Castor" notification sound even though i do not have this set anywhere in any profile?

anybody have further ideas to help my secondary profiles ring with their own set custom ringtone?

I don't have a VPN on owner profile and I do on secondary. could that cause this issue?

Hi, I have the same problem. I've tried everything to change the second user's ringtone but unsuccessful.
I've searched on reddit and etc but I did not find any answer and yes if anybody has an answer that would be lovely!

            3 months later

I also have this issue. Currently using pro 7.

            8 months later

Also I clicked "add a ringtone", and picked an .mp3 file from a folder within phone's ~/Downloads, but it ended up polluting the available options with literally ALL the .mp3 that were in that Download folder.....
(Doing all that on main undeletable admin profile)

So , I had a bit of joy with this today.
I set the "Owner" profile with one of my personal ringtones , and then the same ringtone in my user profile , and it worked!! The phone now rings with my ringtone in the user profile .

I could not get it to work with the sms app though.
