Sziasztok! Hello!

I will possibly be living in Hungary next year for a while. Has anyone who has lived/visited Hungary had any issues with either using GrapheneOS there, or with any of the cellular providers, particularly Yettel?

I would be very interested to know if there are any carrier services there, like Mint Mobile in the USA, that will allow an anonymous sign up?

Köszönöm szépen!
Thank you!

Szia, yes I have been many years in Hungary and could use all networks with my silent.link eSIM (Telekom, Vodafone, Yettel) without problems on GOS. Maybe your provider will lock you in one of them, but it works just fine. GOS will likely accept and work with any regular provider out there.

I sometimes have had connection issues when switching borders between European countries. Using another roaming profile solved this for me (see my post here).

So for anonymous sign up I'd recommend silent.link (although you can't really be anonymous on such tracking network without a lot of good OPSEC). And regarding other issues with GOS in Hungary: Nothing out of the ordinary. When you connect to a public network such as the one from MAV (Hungary's main train company) you'll get a lot of disconnects unless you switch you Mac randomization from per connection to per network. Location in many apps will take a while to work when you're leaving the WiFi and Bluetooth location toggles off. So the "issues" are like everywhere else, when using advanced security and privacy features GOS offers by default but services don't expect them.

I frequently visit Hungary, and have had no issues with my P8P using a UK sim and locking in to any of their networks. In the countryside a network might have a better signal than others, but generally it is a flat country so reception is usually good.
Although if staying for a significant time then you are likely to need to take on a local sim, or the roaming charges will catch up very quickly

N1b Thank you for the info!! I have not heard of silent.link do they have a good reputation?

Good to know about the wifi on MAV, but having traveled with them before, I think the wifi is the least of their problems, ha!

Rename4883 I have no big issues with silent.link and like how they allow you to buy roaming eSIMs with XMR and without leaving an EMail address.

I once bought a number to register WhatsApp for a group I needed to join and WhatsApp kept flagging my account as spam every few months, which could always been reversed texting their customer service and explaining silent.link. I take this as good news since WhatsApp on GOS and with a silent.link number doesn't seem to get sufficient data to distinguish me from a bot.

I've also read that there have been issues with the customer service in case something doesn't work, but I got no experience here.

Silent.link is not cheap and makes only sense if your current country requires KYC for a SIM card like mine does. Also you can't send SMS or make calls, just receive them. So there are not many use cases without cheaper or better alternatives...
