Hello! I've been a user of GrapheneOS for almost a year now. It's been an incredible experience.

Just recently, however, apps have have started closing by themselves. The main experiences I've had are with the Reddit app suddenly going dark then kicking me back to the home screen, and YouTube Music playback stopping abruptly. The latter is very annoying and (in my limited testing) occurs with Spotify too.

Attached are the logs from YouTube Music.

graphite_pencil this might be a stretch and might be completely off base, but have you allowed Google Play Services to run in the background? Go to Settings > Apps > All apps > Google Play Services > App battery usage > (tap the text allow background usage), then make sure background usage is enabled and set to "unrestricted".

I am having the same issue with Proton Apps regularly crashing to the home screen. I have developer options turned off and Play Services set to unrestricted battery usage. I initially thought this was a Proton app issue, but recent app updates haven't helped.

      Any others experiencing similar issues?

Are you using a Pixel 8 series or 9 series device? If so, do you have memory tagging enabled for these apps?

Proton apps are known to have memory safety issues which causes memory tagging to (rightfully) stop them from occurring.

graphite_pencil a few apps do this for me with memory tagging enabled. Try disabling for the troublesome apps see if if helps

DeletedUser131 Are these apps installed in a private space?

          No.

GrapheneOS Turn off developer options as a starting point.

I've had them on basically ever since I've installed GrapheneOS with no issue, but I'll try that out and see if it improves something.

Google Play Services have been set to unrestricted since day 1. I additionally tried doing this for YouTube Music (thanks for the clicking the text hint!) to no avail.

I have since my original post updated to Android 15, where the issue still persists.

I'm at a slight loss for what could the issue could be, especially since it started occurring only recently. Thank you for all the help in the meantime!

I am using Pixel 8 and I just turned off memory tagging for my Proton Apps. Everything seems to be working fine now. I haven't encountered any crashes since this change.

          Thanks for letting me know!

I'm having a similar problem with MollyIM, tried installing it both via Accrescent and F-Droid, but it crashes as soon as I enter the passphrase and try to use the app.

GrapheneOS related question, if it is recommended to have Developer options turned off, is there another way I can view on device currently running services other than "Running services" option? Thanks in advance for your reply.

About 10 days later with Developer options off and no improvement. Any other ideas? If not I'll probably go through the pain of a reinstall. This issue is really bothersome.

graphite_pencil Try turning off developer options, turn on exploit protection compatibility mode, turn off memory tagging, allow both DCL settings. This should at least rule out the usual suspects.
