  • Do I need to update my Pixel before installing GrapheneOS?

  • [deleted]

Hi :)

I just wanted to know if I needed to update a new unboxed Pixel to the lastest version before installing GrapheneOS.

The reason I wanted to know was so I don't need to go to a local cafe with slow speeds or connect it to my home WiFi to download and install it.

Thanks!

    [deleted] Hi :)

Hello, the short answer is no.

I just wanted to know if I needed to update a new unboxed Pixel to the lastest version before installing GrapheneOS.

GrapheneOS flashes the latest firmware early in the installation process.

For more information, please carefully read https://grapheneos.org/install/web#prerequisites and make sure you meet all the requirements before proceeding.

No, at least you shouldn't have. Especially if you are using the web installer.

    Strictly speaking, no; but...

It's best practice to update the device before installing GrapheneOS to have the latest firmware for connecting the device to the computer and performing the early flashing process. Either way, GrapheneOS flashes the latest firmware early in the installation process.

Lol. Nice that we all agree!

If it's a 6a that was manufactured in the first batch and has been sitting on a shelf somewhere all this time, you will need to update it to get OEM unlocking (as the directions say). Otherwise, as others indicated, the installer will do any necessary updates.

As a general principle, it's not a bad idea to update a new device out of the box while it still has the stock OS. For a laptop it may be much easier to get firmware updated via the original OS. But the GrapheneOS updater is thorough.

Thanks for all the responses guys :)

Would there be any negatives/downsides to not updating to the latest firmware beforehand? Just to confirm.

    Thanks again.

Your phone won't behave any different once it's all done.
