WiFi Triangulation
You’re being lied to. Airplane mode does NOT hide your location. Google and Apple continue to collect it, by seeing what WiFi endpoints are near you, and then figuring out where you are through a process known as “WiFi Triangulation”. [1]
Baseband Modem
Further, phones have two “brains”, and the part that connects to the cell towers does NOT have to obey Airplane mode. This is called the “baseband modem”, and airplane mode is an API request from the main motherboard to this modem, ASKING if it would PLEASE consider killing service."

My question is about whether the baseband modem protects against pings to cell phone towers. I've seen others suggest it may not. My understanding of Graphene OS devs's view is that it always does and to say that the baseband modem doesn't follow instructions is a conspiracy without evidence.
I posted on here a long time ago using a pseudonym, but then I decided I didn't need to be afraid since my threat model is so low so I started using my real name, Angela. Back then, I was concerned things were getting past the VPN on rare occasion. I was told my toggle settings were wrong, end of story, and now they are patching some errors that did occur back then. (I am not complaining about this, it got notice and patched quickly.)
I am not trying to spread misinformation or create confusion. The rumor for a long time was cell phones ping when in airplane mode and off just less frequently, just like the rumor was VPNs didn't offer protection in mobile phones, just like the current rumor is they can track VPN users and often determine Tor users based on timing.)
This concern does matter. I don't matter and am an insignificant person. Someone who is a policial activist operating in a hostile regime in which towers and infrastructure are all tightly controlled by the state could be impacted by this.
However such activists are mostly trying to blend in. Graphene OS is often visible because of it's logo which would be a risk in certain places. In some countries they are developing more and more of their own software to control everyone and you can't opt out. It isn't everywhere yet. I do not think there is a way to replace the GOS logo for those that would like it.
I would like some views on this. Rumors are sometimes true.
