Man, I have a pixel 6.

Since this morning (probably the last update), typing /swiping expererience has become horrible

Unresponsive feeling where half the time I touch the screen it simply does nothing.

I removed screen protector because I thought it was related to my device. I switched to another airtight virgin profile, to see if an app on my phone was causing it.

Then i came accross this thread.

I hope this get fixed soon because it makes my phone barely usable right now.

PS : Also sometimes it erases texte and makes me retype, like weirdly selecting and writing over previous text.

    whatever Nakatt

Does this happen all the time or only when the phone is charging? Some users have reported odd touchscreen behavior while charging.

If it is a constant thing, it is possible that the touchscreen hardware is failing. Though it would be very inconvenient, the diagnosis procedure would probably be along these lines:

    • Try turning "Increase touch sensitivity" off or on (in Settings, Display)
    • Back up all data
    • Factory-reset device (this wipes all user data)
    • If problem persists, flash device back to Google's OS

If the problem shows up under both operating systems then it is very likely to be a hardware problem.

As a possible alternative, if you have a nearby repair shop that is willing to replace the screen without resetting the device (some will, some won't), you could try taking it there and showing them the behavior to see if they agree that it's a touchscreen hardware problem.

It is fairly common for an issue to be detected soon after an update even though the issue is not due to the updated software. This is because many GrapheneOS users restart their devices only during software updates, and some hardware issues can appear after a restart.

      Hello,

      Thank you for your answer.

It happens while the phone doesn't charge.

I also toggle on/off the sensitivity setting for display protector, no changes.

I will wait a bit before going back to Google OS because it is a bit of a hassle for me right now, good opportunity for less screen time I guess.

By next week if it persist I will back up and report back.

It is surprising though that the same 24h as me someone has the same problem with the same device.

Nakatt It is surprising though that the same 24h as me someone has the same problem with the same device.

It may seem odd, perhaps even suspicious... but I think the GrapheneOS project estimates there are more than 200,000 GrapheneOS users. So if some piece of hardware decides to wear out on any given day, probably hundreds of other GrapheneOS users will be experiencing that on the same day (see "Birthday paradox"). Further clustering is probably induced because many devices "see" a system update, and thus a reboot, on the same day (after multiple days of an update not being available). So it's less surprising than it might seem if multiple users run into the same hardware problem on the same update day.

The fact that both users in this thread have Pixel 6's might seem to indicate a software problem specific to this device, but Pixel 6 devices are also older than, say, Pixel 8 devices, and are thus more likely to experience random degradation in various pieces of hardware. So it's hard to say whether two P6 reports should raise or lower the suspicion level.

If this is somehow a software bug, I expect there will be many more reports pouring in over the next few days (as happened when Google dropped some bad Bluetooth code recently). Meanwhile it might make sense to chat up any local repair shops before deciding what to do next.

I'm also facing the same issue on the P6. I am not sure if it's a coincidence but I noticed the issue after I updated to 2024082200 (I'm on the stable branch).

Same issue on stock, the hardware is probably starting to fail for everyone at around the same time. Maybe a bad batch?

        • de0u replied to this.

rany Thanks for running the experiment of switching to stock and then reporting the results back to us. I don't know whether or not this situation is expected to worsen over time (maybe a repair shop might have advice).

I'll need a screen replacement. Apparently I broke the digitizer without knowing and the only way to fix it is by replacing the whole screen. The repair isn't going to be cheap (over US$180) and for a phone plagued with so many issues, I'll just buy one of the newer models.

tl;dr it's basically drop damage that didn't show any visible cracks and took a while to worsen

rany Thanks for reporting back! The 8 and 9 both have better security, and DisplayPort Alt Mode, and the 8s are cheaper.

I have the same issue, typing on the p6 is very hit and mis. I use gboard on my S20fe and the p6, and on the p6 its like I have lost the ability to use a touch screen keyboard. So I have turned off 90hz and increase sensativity, to see if that helps.
