Using RCS with Google Messages on GrapheneOS

Just chiming in. I applied an update to GOS this morning, and RCS hasn't worked since.

5rlyn I'm suspecting it's some issue with how phone number verification works between the phone and google. Aside from Messages saying it's trying to verify my phone number, I can't get my phone to show as verified on myaccount.google.com/phone

RCS stopped working with the Lastest update. I missed a very important message from work due to this, extremely frustrating to say the least.

I tried to delete messages, download the older version, provide permissions, but now the app says RCS is not supported on my device.

Is there any way we can rollback to the previous GOS release? I'd really prefer just going back to the working release rather than switch back to stock and have to sign in to all my apps again.

It is showing as "Connecting..." now for me instead of "Setting up..." I tried turning off phone verification and back on, and now it wants me to go to my phone and do it. But I am on my phone using a Chromium browser...

Edit: I installed Chrome and I was able to verify my phone again. It took me from "Connecting" to "Connected." However, messages are not sending as RCS and I cannot receive anything.

jumpdeer I tried installing Chrome, and that at least let me toggle the device on at myaccount.google.com/phone, but mine is stuck on "Verification in progress"

ditto, need to rollback. Was this patch QA'd before it went out? Seems like it broke more than RCS, I dont get SMS messages either.

EDIT: rebooted phone and re-set permissions for READ_DEVICE_IDENTIFIERS, rebooted again and now phone is stuck on setting up RCS.

This is frustrating...

sadly this didnt work for me. Phone says RCS is not available for it, no radio button to turn on or off. I think the update from a day or two ago broke things.

Yep. I reset things on my phone to see if I could replicate my earlier success on the 0905 release, and cannot on the 0908 release. Same versions of messages, etc.

My daughter's phone is on the 0908 release and is still working, but I'll be damned if I can spot any functional difference between the 2 in terms of setup or permissions. Hers is a 6a, mine is an 8a, for what that's worth.

Happy to try something on one or both phones if anyone has any ideas.

Elsewhere it has been suggested that a recent Google Messages update is also involved. It might be interesting if you check version numbers on both phones.

Unfortunately the app version doesn't seem to have any effect any longer.

The current Messages (20250808_03_RC4) works fine on my daughter's device but not mine. It was originally activated on the 0905 Graphene release however.

The old Messages (20240806_01_RC03) that worked on for me (and others) on the 0905 Graphene release no longer activates on the 0908 Graphene release.

Replying to myself because I can't edit the previous post.

I installed the Messages beta (20250907_01_RC00 openbeta, versionCode 289151100) and while it doesn't connect, there is now a details option with some additional debug information.

Right now I'm seeing status code 3000, with details "Please wait, activation is ongoing". So at least that's something. I'll keep playing and see if there's anything else useful in the beta version.

I'm seeing 202508027_00_RC00 as latest on Play Store. I don't suppose that would make any difference?

I'm over my head here as I don't use RCS. So feel free to ignore.

I guess I'm glad to see I wasn't just going crazy when both my phone and my wife's phone stopped sending/receiving RCS yesterday. Any word on rolling back? I may just tough it out since I'm trying to get people to use Signal anyways, but I may need to either roll my wife's phone back or just reflash stock until this gets resolved.

Created an account to add my name here. I contacted my cell provider and they can confirm there are no issues on their end. Same issue.

Novastatic Welp, seems I borked it even more as RCS stopped working today. I tried to re-verify it and do the whole process again, but now it's stating "RCS isn't available for this device"...

Might have to wait a day or two to get it working again...

I did update my messages after RCS worked a few days ago, so that might be the reason.

Novastatic Same here. Strangely if I use an old version of the app (which worked for me before), I get 'rcs not available for your device', but if I update to a newer version i get stuck on 'verifying your phone number'.
