I have used the iheart app for years. Today it stopped working. Not sure if it was because of a GOS update or iheart update, but it seems to be a login error. I do have GSF installed, but not Play store or services. I can login via Vanadium but curious if I can get the app to run again. See attached for the error message. https://postimg.cc/kRB1ycWx

I installed iheart, created account and logged in. No issue observed. Sandboxed google play installed (3 apps).

Thanks for the quick reply. I was using the app without Google Play or GSF for years. I only added GSF recently for the Pixel camera. I guess the app now requires Google Play.

      So iheart answered me:

"Thank you for reaching out to us! I’ll be happy to help.

The iHeartRadio app works on many devices that do not have Google services, so that is not a requirement. Could you please let us know what kind of phone you're having trouble with? And what is the trouble?

I look forward to hearing back from you!"

So I am leaning there was a change to GOS to cause the requirement for all three google services.

Not how this works. If an app doesn't use GServices, it doesn't and that's it. There is nothing GOS could do to force requirement even if they wanted to (well technically they could put code to prevent you from installing any app until you install GMS but that's not what I was talking about).
The easiest thing you could do is uninstall the app and reinstall it then try to login. As this app requires an online account, i doubt you would lose any meaningful local data by doing this. Then, if the issue persist, it probably means the problem comes from your network/network configuration.

Adding all three services worked. However, last week, none were needed. I did try re-install. Tried on various networks, with and without Private DNS and Internet Activity check. I do have access through Vanadium, so that will be my fallback as I am not a fan of running Google services even though they are sand boxed. I will alo keep my dialog with iheart and report back if I learn anything new.

mrtoo Seems like the support staff had outdated info then. In your stead, I would send him a reply saying installing Google Services fixed your issue and thus the app definitely requires it, then ask him to check with dev team or something.

This is the source of your issue. iHeart noticed them and from then expected the rest to be available, as they weren't it likely broke the app as it didn't have appropriate fall back for any errors being returned.

That is exactly what I did with iheart support. I did install the previous version of the iheart app and all worked fine without Google services being installed further proving iheart recently added google services as a dependency.
