How many times did you want to quit GrapheneOS?

When I first moved to GoS I found it all a bit overwhelming. It was first android phone since a Samsung S4 after which I changed to Apple products until early last year when I discovered graphene. I took the plunge and brought a pixel 6 and have never looked back.

I originally tried with sandbox google play but I just couldn't bring myself to trust having google stuff on a degoogled phone, so after reading a lot of comments on this forum and others plus watching content on YouTube and oddessy, over time I made to switch to alternatives or apps that don't require Google to function.

Over time I have found that my screen time has dropped significantly and use a lot fewer apps than I used to. I love the granular control Gos gives me as opposed to iOS or google android.

As for donating Im not clued up on crypto, but i see that GoS has an account to dontate to in my country. My only question is how much I should donate and how often?

There is no "right" amount or regularity. Please only donate what you can spare. Setting up a recurring donation is deal, even if it's for a small amount per month. Having recurring revenue that we can rely on coming in monthly is a great help, as it helps us better evaluate what we can spend.

i appreciate that but it still doesnt output the same quality as my 5 year old note did. it's fine for family photos and stuff but i was able to use my note camera in art projects that the pixel just can't perform for.

plus i just tried to to install pixel camera and now google is blocking me. worked in the past tho.

@Volen and @Tryptamine : I removed some comments about the project members in your replies. I understand they are positive comments and we aren't going to fault either of you for supporting us, it is just best wishes of the team to avoid developer gossip. :) Hope you both understand this. Likewise, it would be best for this thread to avoid being diverted off the thread topic.

While it may appear to either of you sometimes that we come across as critical and grill things (and you like that), it really isn't meant to sound hostile except when what is being discussed is hostile towards security and privacy. Cyber security is an extremely important subject to get right and we don't stay silent about things when something is misleading, unsafe or malicious. It is a symbolic part of security culture. Critique and scrutiny is part of revealing a problem, which is then a part of introducing innovation. Just accepting problems that people have now means no one would bother to actually tackle the problems they have. It is why we have many features first or we are the leading example for security features after all.

The feeling of security is really easy to sell to people, and there are people who make their name off of selling or getting fame from a false image of security expertise. When people put their trust in false security, it endangers them and the people around them. As people who work in security and privacy on a daily basis, anything that goes against those values or takes them away from people is unacceptable and it would also be ironic if we didn't do anything about it either. We do our best to avoid being negative. :)

final It's all good. It's not my forum, it's your forum, so don't worry, i almost never take offense to anything anyways. I made it a strict policy of mine over 15 years ago to never take offense to anything unless it was very strongly, obviously meant to be offensive! Since then,
i have yet to come across anything that meets that high bar...

I do appreciate everything that the GOS team is trying to do here, despite the rough road that has been your past. Many development teams would have buckled under the pressure, but here you have formed the GrapheneOS foundation and attracted a quarter million users! That is absolutely fantastic success so far, and whatever I can do in my small way, even if it is being tolerant of your rules, helping new users with advice, small things like that I'm more than happy to give back.

I'm in a terrible financial place right now on long-term disability trying to find a permanent place to live in a city with a housing crisis, or else I would be donating! In the future I will certainly be, right now I'm teaching myself Java, and it is very easy for me to learn so perhaps I will be able to give back by helping to develop something small in the future, who knows?

I have had lots of talks with @GrapheneOS on Reddit, and those conversations have drastically changed my views on digital security, and changed my behaviors. Things I was doing that I thought were secure I realized were not, and now I'm trying to spread that knowledge around, paying that kindness forward and letting others know that certain practices are degrading their digital security.

I completely understand the view that when it comes to security, and false senses of security a zero-tolerance attitude is best! I myself have very low tolerance when people are unwilling to accept crucial facts, and prefer to take comfort in cognitive dissonance or other connotative biases... Especially* when that dissonance is harming themselves, and most especially when it is harming those whom they are spreading harmful information towards! People deserve accurate information about their privacy and security (and other things in this life!) instead of false information to base their decisions upon. It is absolutely essential! I certainly take the exact same view as you and the GOS team does on that subject!

I think I can take something else from what you said, and try in the future to not be negative in what or how I portray things... I do sometimes get a bit doom and gloom in how I present the state of things, and why we need projects like GrapheneOS. Thanks for your wise words. :)

I haven't considered quitting GrapheneOS a single time. In fact, thanks to GrapheneOS I have a healthy relationship with my smartphone again. It's the first time in years that I trust my phone.

When I first installed GOS, the only thing I thought I would miss was Android Auto. And I kept my old phone in the car just to use it for Android Auto. But in the end I learned to live without it. And just as I did, GOS included Android Auto.

The only thing I kind of miss are NFC payments with Google Pay. But my secondary bank's app has NFC mobile payments, so I use that instead. But the implementation is a bit wonky, and not 100% reliable, so that's why I'd say I kind of miss Google Pay. But I'm not sure I'd trust giving Google access to all my NFC payments anyways.

My other minor complaint when I started using GOS was that 1password wouldn't "trust" Vanadium as a browser for autofill, so it would treat it as a regular app. And there wasn't any chromium-based open source browser that would work with 1password in GOS. But all that changed last week. At almost the same time, Brave fixed their autofill implementation to work in GOS, and somehow now I get browser autofill with 1password and Vanadium too. I don't know if it was a change in Vanadium, or in how 1password treats browsers it doesn't trust. So in the last week I've gone from not having autofill in any Chromium based browser besides Vivaldi, which I don't trust, to having autofill in Brave, which I distrust less than Vivaldi, and then having autofill in Vanadium, which I trust and is my preferred browser experience.

The only other minor complaint I'd have at this point in time, is that I wished Vanadium website shortcuts in the home screen didn't open in incognito mode when "open external links in incognito" is enabled, as from my POV, a Vanadium-created shortcut shouldn't be treated as external. Or the alternative would be to be able to have a personalisable new tab page where I can put as many website shortcuts as I'd like, and be able to sort them however I liked. If I could have that feature, I wouldn't need to have a second browser.

brightjob4495 and somehow now I get browser autofill with 1password and Vanadium too.

I now get password-autofill for 1Password using Vanadium as well. Perhaps related to the new Chromium autofill framework. But to note, when using the GOS Keyboard and then tapping the sign-in suggestion bubble, 1Password just crashes. Switching to GBoard, it autofills, but shows a warning about the app not being supported. Moreover, 1Password is still blocking passkeys from being filled in Vanadium, which can't be bypassed. This is version 8.10.32-11.BETA. I'm not going to report the 1Password crash to their support, as they have already clarified to me that Vanadium is not on their allowlists. Which distinguishes them from Google. I can thankfully just use Google or other entities for my passkeys, and ignore 1Password.
