  • Google Cast works for these apps (Sandboxed Google play installed)

  • [deleted]

Hi, could you guide me what exactly needs to be enabled to cast? I see no devices. I tried to enable location and bluetooth but I see no devices. I would like to use second user profile for it. "My" google play services has no permissions but network. I briefly allowed near devices, bluetooth and location. It didn't help.
On my other device (old Pixel) when these two are enabled I can see devices and can cast anything to TV.

Stremio works for casting no further setup beyond default permissions and initializing.

[deleted] only network permission is required for play services. What streaming device are you trying to cast to? Using a VPN app, need to allow LAN connections?

[deleted] did you install app on streaming device?

@nrt I will add them to the initial post and tidy up the thread where necessary as you add them for now.

I tried to get Google Photos to work. It does pick up that Chromecast is available but it won't cast. I tried VLC also but it had very bad buffering and would start and stop all the time. Localcast seemed the best option but need to block many many ads and trackers.

VLC works withOUT gcrap installed, and as far as I can tell, is the ONLY thing that will.

Well VLC will be moving a lot more data on your network, since your phone has to transmit the data to your wifi AP, and then your wifi AP has to transmit the same data to the CC. This could be even worse if you are restreaming data as it is being received from a network source, which means the data passes through the air THREE TIMES.

My suggestion is to WIRE the CC to your network, rather than having it on wifi. This should free up the bandwidth and improve things drastically. As far as I can tell, every version of CC will work with USB ethernet adapters. G* sells ones that also have power adapter integrates, or you can cobble something up from amazon, for example with a USB hub that can supply power, or finally, you can cut and splice USB wires to connect power between the CC and network adapter.

One other potential issue for your CC... if you have a really old CC that just can't handle the data that VLC is sending to it. If that's the case, it might be time to look at upgrading it.
