I saw the tweets from Daniel regarding Seedvault having reliability issues (which I agree with) so I'm creating this thread to follow the feature's development.

When I tried GOS recently the lack of a reliable backup tool was a dealbreaker for me so I hope that someone will update this thread when the feature gets improved. I'm not sure of any other way I can follow the feature's development and get notifications for it without getting irrelevant notifications for the entire GOS project so I hope this thread will do.

3 months later

same: dealbreaker.

nevertheless i have already climbed the learning curve and am installed on new device. i guess i don't want to backtrack from my first step toward degoogland. so im looking forward to any restore method that's more convenient than:

  1. use 3rd party app to backup/restore contacts, calendar, sms, call log.
  2. take screenshots of the list of all installed apps as a way to keep track of what to install on new device
  3. restore apps that keep their data in cloud. log in to each one on the new device. sorry but you also have to do the dance to register many of these apps on the new device. sux.
  4. then restore the apps that use local storage, starting with the ones where the dev stored the data in the proper place (so that it was backed up). hope for the best.
  5. then restore the rest of the apps where the dev was lazy and stuck the data where it wasn't backed up. but sorry!- there's no real way to tell between these two categories until restore time while crossing your fingers.
  6. hope that i recently backed up /downloads, /pics, and other folders i care about

I personally just use syncthing, automatic when on WiFi at home and charging. Straight to my PC + external. Haven't had to fuck with it after setup in many many months.
