[deleted] Hi guys, Looking to switch to GOS but had a quick question. Does the Ring doorbell app work with getting push notifications? Thanks!
Sifer [deleted] If the app released via the play store then be sure you will need google services for push notification to work smoothly. My better half uses amazon (app) on her grapheneos phone and she had to install play services to get delivery notification and the like.
Viewpoint0232 I have the Ring doorbell app and notifications do NOT work without Play Services. Sifer If the app released via the play store then be sure you will need google services for push notification to work smoothly. This is not necessarily true, for example I found that Kakaotalk Messenger - which is exclusively distributed through Play, you can't even download the APK from their website - has working push notifications without Play.
Blastoidea The problem with words is that in spite of dictionary definitions, they may mean different things to different folks. Hence, discussions like this one. Addendum; You couldn’t get me to accept and install any doorbell app.
boldsuck Blastoidea Addendum; You couldn’t get me to accept and install any doorbell app. Especially from Ring. In the USA they cooperate with the cops. In Germany this can make you liable to prosecution.
[deleted] boldsuck True, But in the US most companies comply with LE. Also EFF put out this article which made me feel a little better haha https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2024/01/ring-announces-it-will-no-longer-facilitate-police-requests-footage-users
boldsuck Viewpoint0232 Video surveillance is generally only permitted if your own property is being filmed. If the recordings extend beyond the personal or family area, for example because the street or a neighbor's property is filmed by the camera, the General Data Protection Regulation applies. As a rule, the operation of a camera is not permitted if it (also) covers publicly accessible areas. Recording conversations at the front door is also generally prohibited. This especially applies to recordings that are triggered by the motion sensor. Court rulings on this are all in German. e.g.: LG Essen judgment of January 30, 2019 – 12 O 62/18 AG Cologne, judgment of September 22, 2021 - 210 C 24/21
