  • I already use sandboxed google play on my owner profile mostly for notifications. Right now I use Aurora Store to download and install APKs but I'm wondering if I truly gain much by not using the safer (and more reliable) Play Store since I already have the sandboxed google play installed.

If I just create a new google profile on my owner profile and don't use it at all besides for downloading apps (not buying them) what does Google really know more about me than before?

As far as I can tell they don't know a lot more, right?

    • mmmm Yes I totally get your point. I'll probably end up with a similar solution to yours but right now I'm considering buying a pixel tablet when there is a good discount, install GOS on it and start using this as streaming "box" which I could also use while travelling.

    • Thanks for your input! I tried Kodi again and I think that I don't want to use it as it just gets very hacky and not user friendly if you want to use streaming services and not watch something that you've already downloaded yourself.

      • mmmm replied to this.
      • Yeah I think buying a pixel 8 or a pixel tablet would be the best solution but I'm not sure if this would allow me to watch stuff in 4k.

Also do you know if it's possible to control an android device (not a TV) using some kind of remote? Otherwise I'd end up with a cable through the whole room to be able to pause/forward etc.

        • I'm thinking about what I can do to increase my privacy when it comes to watching TV. I currently own an Android TV which is connected to the internet with a PiHole in my network but I have the feeling it's not a good solution as it still leaks a lot of data.

I'm asking myself what the best/most private setup would be. I know these solutions exist but haven't tried any:

I don't want a complicated setup with a lot of different apps. I basically only want to watch Netflix and YouTube and maybe something like Cloudstream. I'm not sure about which resolutions the setups I listed above support. For example Netflix on a TV box with LineageOS will probably only support 720p or 1080p because of Widevine.

I'd prefer to also have an oldschool remote to control my TV and not use a touchscreen/keyboard.

          • The only thing I currently know which is missing from GrapheneOS is GPay and I think some people have had some issues with Google Assistant but I've personally never used that. Nearly all features that are available in stock OS are also available on GrapheneOS.

Have you tried installing the sandboxed Google Play Services and using Google Drive on GrapheneOS? Although most people who use GrapheneOS try to minimize the amount of data they give to Google you don't have to do that.

If I were in your boots and you feel the need to absolutely need Google Drive then I'd try it on GrapheneOS first.

But maybe if you share what you exactly tried to do with seedvault and what didn't work someone could help you solve this problem because right now we just know "something doesn't work well enough with some configuration".

            • Found it thanks to you and it looks quite interesting! I don't think there'll be any privacy implications because it just seems to be "dumb" device as you said.

            • Did anybody find a fix for this? I mean besides using a different launcher or switching to 3-button navigation.

            • I personally use YubiKeys for this and I have the app installed on every profile. This is imo the easiest way (and probably also a quite secure one) because the important data is never saved on your device/profile and stays on your YubiKey. You can of course use another hardware authentication device besides YubiKey.
