Panda7878 curious about this. Can you setup call forwarding from your physical sim to your jmp chat number so that you can keep that sim offline?

I had issues with jmp.chat, so I cancelled my account after a month. Not sure if it's me, GOS, or what, but I had issues with my phone answering phone calls thru jmp.chat. I liked it, but it was very unreliable for me.

Panda7878 It works for me, but I never use it tbh. Will probably cancel my subscription. Having an American phone number in Europe is just not very practical.

I'm still simless since I swapped to GOS, and so far I have had only 1 or 2 situations where it was really annoying. But to be fair, I've had my old phone on standby at all times, in case I need to use it. So its def not a super efficient setup.

It's interesting to find out where you are willing to give in for efficiency, or hold out for privacy.

I would love to go simless, but I need to keep my sim card in case of emergency, such as my car breaking down. I currently keep my GOS phone in airplane mode and only get data for my mobile number and apps via wifi. So, do you keep your old phone with a sim to use for emergency? I would love to figure out a scenario to be able to get data to my phone without a sim card in my phone and not using my car's wifi, as I am not comfortable connecting my phone to my car in any scenario. Perhaps, an old flip phone is the answer. Just keep it active and only turn it on in case of emergency. Any suggestions would be welcome!

I leave my old phone on, but in one location. I have a ntfy + tasker setup for forwarding any missed calls or SMS or WhatsApp notifications that pings my GOS phone. If I really need to call and I cannot use signal I can use jmp + cheogram.

For my day to day it works. I use an eSIM from silent link for my data paid for with XMR since I need internet besides WiFi.

Everyone has to do what works best for them. I like the idea of a mobile hot spot and I keep a sim card with a cheap talk and text only plan and my phone on airplane mode 24/7, partly due to all the friends I have on Signal and partly because I haven't found a cheap VOIP plan to transfer my number to. I only connect via wifi and it works for me that way. I know this won't work for everyone, but it makes sense for me.

I think the idea was discussed widely on the forum and it was explained why in particular it's a BAD idea worsening both security and privacy

I'm not an expert but that seems viable.
GOS treats the network/SIM as potentially hostile anyway; however, no sim card in GOS means no unsolicited zero-day SMS/RCS or phone call exploits.

Any suggestions on portable hot spots? Calyx offers a mobile unit for out of
the way places. | would need something stronger than just normal phone data
stuff. One of the portable hot spots would be nice.

Those are less private and secure than simply using a privately obtained
eSIM. We do not recommend using a USB or Wi-Fi based hotspot instead
of the more isolated and more secure radio in the phone. USB is much
worse for isolation than the IOMMU isolation used within the phone.

When checking a mobile router I saw this security research project Blue Merle https://github.com/srlabs/blue-merle which seems to harden the device.
One of the things they do is also this though

The blue merle software package can be used to conduct an IMEI change upon every SIM card change to provide a new device identity

This seems to address most of the privacy concerns from your links, but that would be illegal in most countries I guess lol

Apple is going now against carrier based location tracking too a little? What GrapheneOS already did by using proxy or disabling it. But I am not technical experienced enough to make correct assumptions about that.
If Blue Merle could use Graphenes proxies for those issues? (Not expecting an answer)

For mobile hotspot, if you are really concerned, if you use a mobile router with a throwaway SIM data plan, just once and then get rid of it - seems very private.
