  • Do multiple users on Mullvad VPN count as seperately connected devices

Hello, first post from a beginner. I came from iOS. English is not my native language.

I use Mullvad VPN on my devices. Mullvad allowes you to use your account with up to 5 devices connected simultaniously. I need to know if using multiple profiles might cause a disconnect on another device.

So, if multiple users are active, do they always count each as a connected device? I assume an inactive user does not count, correct? Is there maybe a dependency on whether they are connected to another server or not (as a way of distinghuising a different ‘device’). Does anyone know this from everyday use?

I am not yet at the stage of testing myself, I have only installed GOS itself and a few stores.

Johannes It seems they don't count how many devices are actively using the VPN. They have a limit of how many valid keys can be used with each account. So, in other words, once a device is added, it counts towards the 5 device limit, though devices can be removed.

You can see the list of devices and remove them after logging in here: https://mullvad.net/en/account/devices

Each new profile counts as a new key when signing into the Mullvad app on the different profiles.

I have heard that using the Wireguard app on several profiles, each instance set up with the same config file, would make them count as one device. But it's not an option if you require a different VPN configuration for each profile.

As 233328 said if you use the same config file for each user it will only count as one active device. This should not cause an issue since there should not be a time when two users are active at the same time.

I installed Mullvad with two profiles. They act as two different devices. Which is great.

But Mullvad keeps crashing in the second Profil, if I have exploit protection compatibility mode turned off.

In the main Profil, I don't have to....

        Any ideas?

Can you confirm a user session left open in the background will never produce any network traffic?

I probably will not be in the position of using different Mullvad profiles (too many other devices on Mullvad) but did you solve the crashing issue?
Were you using the Mullvad app, OpenVPN or a WireGuard app?

Overlay1404 If a user profile is left active in the background, apps in that profile can connect to the network. If you don't want a user profile to be able to run in the background, you can disable the toggle in Settings or end session manually.

Johannes No, see my comment above.
