Are you guys just look at the calculator or actually use it? Its the last app id give a fck about, looks-wise.
Same with the SMS. You wanna avoid SMS anyways because its unsafe, so if it looks shit maybe you will be even more disgusted by it.

Yes and no. SMS sucks but if you are somewhere remote, at least in good old Germany SMS may be necessary. And then you would wish to have encrypted SMS like in Deku SMS. Or stuff like sending images without MMS, using "Image SMS".

The latter one is 5yo so not an option for GrapheneOS really.

How? I've looked and looked and still can't see how to do this. (I've got secondary devices that don't use GOS where I need to do prevent updates).

Open the Play store app -> Click on "Manage apps and device" -> Click on "Manage" -> Click on the App you want to prevent from auto-updating -> Click on the three dots in upper right -> Disable "Enable auto-update".

The only Simple app I haven't replaced is Gallery, as I find the editor decent and simple (no pun intended). But Aves is a better photo browser.

I have tried a number of times to get used to Aves. Sometimes the app that works best for me is one that is narrowly focused; for my needs for a Gallery app Aves is too feature-rich, and it seems like every app update for it brings a list of new features added.

A suggestion I recently came across that seems to be exactly what I am looking for is 'Gallery' by lacoblonut. As soon as in the github listing I saw that IzzySoft is a code contributor then I had high expectations; he is also a code contributor to Raival-e File-Explorer which is for me an indispensable file manager; it is so good that this is what the AOSP stock file manager should be, in my opinion.

Some of you may have deactivated the automatic updates of the Simple Apps just as I did after I've read about the sellout of the Simple Tools.
Today, I have noticed, that the Fossify Gallery (also the name in the store) is now officially available in the F-Droid store.
I have installed it and it works perfectly fine.
Simple Gallery is finally deinstalled.

What security flaws are you talking about for offline apps? Most AOSP apps (Gallery, Calculator, Clock) shipped with GrapheneOS were not updated for ages and that's totally fine given they are completely offline.

This is especially bad as the SMT apps could have been good replacements for the old unmaintained AOSP apps GrapheneOS ships.

Afaik, the Filemanager is the only App (with a launcher icon) that is actually maintained.

Eury the file explorer hasnt have an update for 15mo (same on F-Droid but the last release is really that old).

For a tiny Gallery I would use Leafpic revived (still years old) which even has an editor. I see no reason for that other Gallery, and that Android design wasting 30% of screen space makes no sense at all. Fossify Gallery it is!

I would say worry less about open source nature of apps rather than permissions you give them. In this case a whole new horizon opens up for you if you can handle it right. I'm sure the GOS devs would agree with me on this one.
