ve3jlg The main problem for me is requiring Play services. I consider using anything-Google a major privacy leak. Google has proven itself to be untrustable in class-action lawsuits. So that means I do not install Google Play crap, which excludes some apps, much as I like them and would be willing to pay if available through another channel.
Not to derail this thread, but on GrapheneOS it's just a regular app that you can run over VPN. I'm signed into throwaway account that has a payment method attached to it, where the only 'real' piece of information about me is my billing country and my postal code.
I too have strong preference for FOSS apps with outside payment channels, but between that and having a robust setup (both in terms of apps I can use and a way to update them) I will always prefer the latter. Ideally, I would like to not use Play services at all, but I don't find it feasible at this time. YMMV of course.
